About Us
We are a small, elite, passionate group that own or just love Marchador horses. In 2011, there were over 70 members located in 25 states and 3 Canadian Provinces that share their love for what the Brazilians call “the Perfect Horse”. Our main focus is on our registry and breed standards. However, we also try to promote the Mangalarga Marchador breed and recognize our members in those efforts. Show in any organized horse event or competition and receive recognition and awards from the Association. Present your Marchador at a horse expo and get help setting up a display or booth. The Association offers financial support as well as booth materials to help setting up a display for the Mangalarga Marchador breed and the USMMA. Share stories and pictures about your Marchador in our newsletter, facebook or member blog here on the website. Learn more about the Marchador breed with continuing education efforts and clinics. Support our mission with your funding – all our fees are channeled back into the association. We are 100% volunteers. We welcome your participation and involvement! Where we are on the map! It is a fabulous experience to bask in their native warmth, culture and to learn about the Mangalarga Marchador in its native country. “If you really know Brazil, you have seen enough beauty for half a lifetime.” Brazil is not just coffee, samba and soccer. The fifth largest country in the world (after Russia, Canada, China and the U.S.) it is among the ten leading industrial nations. Brazil is the largest country in South America. Its area of about 8.512 million km ² comprises 47% of the South American continent. The population is 185 million. Its coastline along the Atlantic extends over a length of 7367 km. Registration Help – ABCCMM
ABCCMM registration is not required by the USMMA. Members may elect to dual register their horses with the ABCCMM. If so, the member is responsible for following ABCCMM regulations, completing the necessary forms and paying the ABCCMM fees. ABCCMM Membership is required if you want to register your farm name as a breeding farm to name your foals. The fees are established in Brazilian reals. The annual membership fee is approximately $325 US, but be sure to check an on-line currency converter for actual fees as currency rates fluctuate. You do not need to be an ABCCMM member for many transactions. However, all fees are about double those for a member. All fees are payable by credit card to the ABCCMM. The person in Finance that we have worked with is Claudia@abccmm.org.br. To Register Foals: [caption id=u0022attachment_292u0022 align=u0022alignrightu0022 width=u0022300u0022 caption=u0022DaVinci do Summerwindu0022][/caption] The foals must be the product of two inspected and permanently registered ABCCMM horses. Permanent registration is indicated on the ABCCMM registration document as “LIVRO 5” for stallions or “LIVRO 6” for mares. If their ABCCMM registration number is xxxxxx – 5, they are in Livro 5 (book 5). The breeder/mare owner must communicate the breeding dates to…

Although grays predominate, chestnut, black, bay, buckskin, palomino and paint horses are also present. An adept and extreamly versatile breed, the Mangalarga Marchador is fast becoming one of the most sought after breeds. As with many Iberian breeds they are good cattle horses. They are known for setting the Guinness Book of World Records endurance ride of 8,694 miles in 1994. A perfect trail horse, they could also excel in other disciplines that require agility, stamina, speed and a sound mind. Training of this breed is facilitated by its intelligence, and uses for the breed are unlimited. In work with cattle, in sports, in Brazilian functional trials, or in cross-country horsemanship, the Marchador is outstanding and is obtaining excellent results in comparison to other breeds. This breed is extremely docile and is commonly mounted by children. HISTORY The most popular and widespread horse in Brazil is the Mangalarga Marchador, which developed in 1740. Joao Francisco of Portugal settled in Brazil at the hacienda Campo Alegre, where the Marchador horses began to emerge. Francisco adopted the surname Junqueira…
The Marcha Gaits
The gait of the Mangalarga Marchador is fast and smooth, with a natural amble known as the Marcha. The feet move alternately lateral and diagonally. When there are more lateral movements in the step, the Marcha is called Marcha Picada (like the sauce). It is often described as a broken pace. Where there are more diagonal movements in the step, the Marcha is called Marcha Batida (ba chee da). It is often described as a broken trot. In recent years, although not yet recognized as a separate and distinct marcha, there has been a third category describing where the movements diagonal and lateral are equal, and it is called Marcha de Centro. In all of the marcha gaits, due to the moments of triple hoof support, the horse always has contact with the ground avoiding total suspension. Thus, the rider feels secure and comfortable. The marcha can reach speeds of 14-18km per hour without breaking gait. Which is better? The marcha picada is usually considered the smoothest of the marching gaits. But, the gait you prefer is often a personal choice and may be influenced by the discipline you pursue or the terrain where you ride. What better way to…
MM Bloodlines
There are three different segments of historic breeding lines in the Mangalarga Marchador breed. I. Old ones or Foundation lines — These are lines that started during the XVIIIth century in the South of Minas Gerais state, mainly at Cruzilia region. Favacho Campo Alegre (extinguished) Traituba Narciso (extinguished) Campo Lindo – JB Angahy Engenho da Serra (extinguished) II. Traditional lines, which were born from the foundation lines Abaiba Bela Cruz Ara Catuni Gironda Herdade Passa Tempo (being extinguished) Tabatinga 53 III. João Francisco Junqueira Filho and his son José Frausino Junqueira (born in 1805) are considered the first milestones of this breeding masterpiece. Favacho horses are excellent on Marcha Batida (more diagonal movements), but their morphology is not refined although very expressive. They remind us of the old Sorraia and Alter Real stallions of the XVIIIth century. Most frequent colors: dun, chestnut, bay, and grey. Historical horses: Plutão, Canadá, Duque, Calçado, Manco, Trovão, Montenegro, Fla-Flu, Jambo, Gesso, Calçado, Albatroz, Armistício and Candidato. More recently: Farol, Radical, Quociente and…

OBJECTIVES OF THE REGISTRY: To preserve, maintain and promote the concepts of breed purity and genetic diversity of the Mangalarga Marchador in North America. To ensure and warrant the genetic identification of horses born in North America. North American-born foals that are the product of two USMMA-registered Mangalarga Marchador parents can also be registered in the USMMA’s purebred Marchador books. The registration certificate must be signed by you, the current recorded owner. (Phone # and email are not on the current registration certificate, but would be helpful to add.) The seller should communicate the transaction and provide the new owner contact information to the USMMA Registry office. Mail the original registration document to the USMMA office along with the required transfer fee. Either the new owner or the seller can pay the required fee. Make all checks payable to the USMMA. We do not allow a foal’s name to be changed after registration. The Registrar will email the UC DAVIS DNA KIT. It is a simple form with 2 pages. One page to complete and return to the USMMA. One page to complete and return to UC Davis with the sample of hair. On young foals, it is sometimes easier to pull the hairs from the tail. The hair samples are 20-30 hairs with the roots attached, taped to the form. UC Davis analyzes the sample and creates the DNA profile and also verifies parentage using the DNA profiles we have on-file. If you are a member, the only fee for registration, if done within 6 months, is the $35 fee required for UC Davis DNA sampling.…
