The USMMA would like to thank Tom Sliter: tsliterphotography.com for contributing his time, talent, videos and photographs to the Montana 2013 Clinic.

  • The USMMA/ABCCMM Montana Clinic 2013

A thank you from Montana Clinic Coordinator Tresa Smith.

Obrigada Brazil, Canada, USA,  Montana and Volunteers for an exceptional clinic.

The Montana Clinic was held at the Rea Ranch near Helena Montana, September 5-10 of 2013.   It was the largest gathering of Mangalarga Marchador horses ever in the U.S.  with 24 horses participating .   Altogether 40 Marchador enthusiasts turned out to ride, to learn, to help.

The ABCCMM Brazil sent its finest riders and judges to the Montana Clinic. Kate Barcelos shared her wonderful knowledge and riding talents by giving major demonstrations and lectures on the Marchadors gaits, and with her private lessons elevated students to a new level of riding conscience.  The ABCCMM flew their Director of Judges to the clinic to oversee the competition.  Tiago Resende Garcia worked with Montana’s Lori Silcher on the Sela de Ouro to produce its Long Distance Ride and Functional Horse Competition. Tiago, with his judgments and sense of humor, made understanding the Marchador fun as well as informative.

The USMMA financially subsidized the clinic and made it financially feasible.

USMMA members came from Canada with flag and four riders, Laurie and Don Klassen, Dana Johnson and Karen Holman.  These neighbors from the North pitched in and helped in every way possible to make the clinic work.

USMMA members came from the South ,  From  Florida,: Brooke and Faye Little: from South Carolina Aline Greene, from Texas: Cathy Pierce and from Southern  California., USMMA President Susan Gabriel. And Liz Tankersley came from Washington, D.C..  Great riders , great participants, now good friends.

USMMA members from   Montana  were the host committee. Montana provided Mangalarga Marchador Mounts  for the Clinic.  Even a non biased account would have to comment on the exceptional quality of the horses. Moreover, the Montana Committee: Lori Silcher, who coordinated the Sela de Ouro with Tiago,  Eliza Frazer, Chris Nielson,  Rox Rogers, Derek Brown, Dr. Tia Nelson,  and Kindle McCauley  worked really, really hard to make the clinic happen and succeed. As one person aptly noted, “Everyone had their oar in the water.”     I might note that there was an informal Montana committee as well of attendees who found themselves not just participating but helping :  Ann Damrow, Jodi, Cody Hill and  Lori Connor..

Official Volunteers made the clinic run smoothly.  Tom Sliter of Washington .D.C. and Kenton Rowe of Helena , Montana, came with their cameras to record the clinic for history and its participants. Lane and Linda Coulston, helped with horses, stalls  sound systems and meals,. John Connor did yeomen work of stall cleaning. Peter Silcher and Ross Damrow helped Derek Brown with the arena arrangements.  We also had a wonderful visitor/volunteer from Brazil, Ana Boareto who helped in every way.

  • America’s Favorite Trail Horse Competition

Lori SilcherThe American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA)
Hi, this video is my horse Bali, (4 Seasons Marchador stallion) and I in the competition for America’s Favorite Trail Horse competition. I hope you will watch it from start to finish and enjoy it so we get your vote! We put our heart into it, had a GREAT time doing it. The rules said, less than 5 minutes, tough to show all he can do, but here is a sample of this, young, kind hearted stallion doing his best, as always for me.http://www.facebook.com/ACTHA Look in the left hand column and click on “Peoples Choice audition”, then scroll down, go to page two and find us. The only way your vote will be counted is if you click on the “vote” box, the like button will not count. Thanks!!!!! I think this is a GREAT way to get our Marchadores seen!

  • 2011 Complete Horse Competition

by Lynn Kelley, SW Future Foal @ Summerwind Marchadors

Caboclo da Pidade and Lynn Kelley holding the Lucas Guerra Complete Horse Award

I was puzzled when a package arrived at my front door that was not expected.  Inside was a wonderful surprize – the first Lucas Guerra plaque awarded to the winner of the USMMA’s complete horse competition!   I had won with my Marchador, Caboclo da Piedade.

If you’re hearing about this contest for the first time, there is more news on our website about it.  Find it all at  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/shows-and-events/complete-horse-test/.  There are instructions, rules, a setup guide and a video that shows the obstacles in the competition.

2011 was the first year for us to adopt this Brasilian tradition sometimes also called “PROVAS FUNCIONAL, functional test).  The USMMA runs it as a VIDEO submittal competition.  You film yourself and your horse running the course and a panel of 3 judges evaluates the video for penalties and time.

YOUTUBE VIDEO of the Complete Horse Test  http://youtu.be/asM856jn60g

I found the gate to be the hardest obstacle for me. John built our gate and a friend made our poles!

The Complete Horse Competition is designed for easy set-up in your own back yard.  That’s what me and Caboclo did.

This is an on-going competition so be sure to try it out with your Marchadors in 2012!   Connie Claire is planning to add a Complete Horse course and test to the 2012 MM clinic in FL so we know there will be more entries in 2012!  Any Marchador with any rider is eligible to enter and you can enter as often as you want as you improve!

    Have fun!

Sandy on Amora (Aliane Fazenda Zouga) & Bill on Andante (Apple Pie de Miami)

Sandy and I participated in the 2011 National Cavalry Competition and Bivouac in September. It was held at historic Fort Reno, just west of Oklahoma City, OK. Until its closure as an active Army post, it was one of three Remount Centers that provided many thousands of horses and mules to the Cavalry, Artillery, and Quartermaster branches. During WWII it was also a large Prisoner of War camp.

We enjoyed some success at this year’s Competition. Sandy placed 2nd of 18 in Level 3 (Novice) Military Horsemanship.  Bill  placed 3rd of 16 in Level 2 Military Horsemanship (Intermediate).  We also participated in other events, including Mounted Pistol and Mounted Saber, with less success but lots of fun. On Saturday we held a formal parade and ceremony. We mustered 70+ mounted soldiers and also had two artillery pieces from Ft. Sill, OK (about 120 south of Ft. Reno). We were very pleased that Andante and Amora stood quietly even for the firing of the 75mm gun!

Next year’s event will be at Ft. Riley, KS (about 100 miles west of Kansas City, MO).

  • President’s Letter December 2012

    by John Kelley

Happy Holidays to all USMMA Members!

    2011 in Review!

It has been another busy year for the USMMA and the growth of the MM breed here in North America.

We held our first MM Gait Clinic in Texas. Many thanks to Megan and Colin Fallwell of Legacy Marchadors for sponsoring the event.  Connie Claire plans to build on this tradition with an April 2012 Clinic in Ocala Florida. See the post on that for details.

I hope everyone has had an opportunity to visit our new USMMA website,  which Colin Fallwell and Lynn Kelley created this year. Funding for this project was generously provided by Susan and Holm Neumann, Cascade Marchadors. Check out the section on the marcha gaits which includes video of Brazilian Marchadors correctly performing the unique Marcha Picada and Marcha Batida gaits.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/breed/the-marcha-gaits/

We created our fun, online horse competition, based on the Brazilian Functional Test.  We will continue this in 2012 and encourage everyone to try it doing the test with their horses!   Check out the details on our website.  Many thanks to Signa Strom and Theresa Longo for the ideas and development of this and to Ellen Farmer for translating.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/shows-and-events/complete-horse-test/

In July, five USMMA members traveled to Brazil to celebrate the 30th National Competition of the MM.  The ABCCMM MM generously invited US media to attend all or part of their 9 day tour to MM farms and the Show.   As a result of this media effort, the Marchador was on RFD-TV several times  – on RFD TV LIVE and also on THE HORSE SHOW with Rick Lamb.  We will be getting copies of the broadcasts for our use.  http://youtu.be/wfNjEjCuIxw

Our USMMA calendar is done for 2012, this time thanks to USMMA member Ellen Farmer.  With broader participation, this fund-raiser should top $1,000 in monies we can use in 2012 to further promote the breed.  The calendar also goes out to many friends, family, MM lovers and to Brazil helping us spread the word about the beauty and use of the Marchador Horse.

The new website has an on-line pedigree system of USMMA registered horses and Lynn is continuing to add videos and pictures for all horses and additional older pedigree information which goes back to our Brazilian historical roots.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/registry/view-pedigree/#

Our Board of Directors also changed this year. Signa Strom resigned from the Board.  We thank her for her many contributions and wish her the best in her future endeavors. Ellen Farmer, Lusonatica, has been appointed to the Board. The Board also appointed Derek Brown, Vista de Serra, to the Board and we look forward to both their contributions in the future.

The Board appointed Megan Fallwell, Legacy Marchadors to be the USMMA Registrar, effective January 1,2012. Lynn Kelley who was instrumental in creating our registry and working with the Brazilian Association to correct paperwork and establish a close working relationship, has worked closely with Megan over the last few months so that we will have a smooth transition. We have transitioned from the old HorseManager System to WikiHorseWorld, which will give the Registrar and the membership greater flexibility and access to Registry information in the future.   WikiHorseWorld plans to add a Classified Ads section which will be an added benefit.  Many thanks to my spouse for her contributions to the USMMA.

The Board also appointed Aline Oliveira Greene to be our Newsletter Editor.  I am very happy that we found someone to restart this valuable communication tool for the membership. Aline will also help administer the USMMA Facebook and Twitter accounts to encourage contact among the membership.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our April Clinic in Ocala Florida!

    John Kelley, USMMA President

  • President’s Letter to Members

    Bom Dia!

There were 5 USMMA members (John Kelley, Lynn Kelley, Ellen Farmer, Aline Greene and Katie Baily)  who traveled to Brasil to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the ABCCMM National Show in July!  We all had a fabulous time at the show and also traveling around Brazil.  Their hospitality was wonderful and of course, once again, we learned a lot!

I would encourage every member to travel there!

This year the ABCCMM also invited members of the media from North America and from Europe to obtain more publicity and widespread recognition for the Mangalarga Marchador.  From North America.  RFD-TV and The Horse Show with Rick Lamb attended for several days and  filmed extensively. Jane Switzer, from the Horse Show attended the whole program of over 10 days!    All of them are very enthusiastic about telling others about the MM breed. Lynn Kelley  will also be writing press releases and magazine articles from the trip.  As the shows or articles come out, we will share them with you.

ABCCMM Presidente Magdi Shaat is very interested in the international presence of the Mangalarga Marchador  and we met two new MM associations from Italy and Argentina.

While we were there, we had several meetings with the ABCCMM, the Brazilian association, and also discussions with the EAMM, the European association about ideas and plans that would help us achieve our goals of promoting this magnificent breed.  Here are some of the ideas we discussed:

    1.     Pat Parelli, probably the most well-known trainer around the world, to perform at the next MM National Show.  (This year they had Monty Roberts).   We will try to set up a meeting with Pat.

    2.    Frozen semen and frozen embryo exportation. There is only one collection center currently, and the costs are such that only a few breeders will attempt this, but the plans continue to expand in this area.

    3.   The 2012 USMMA clinic in Ocala FL.  The ABCCMM has offered its help and support to make this bigger and better.   Watch for more information coming out on this!  We’ll send a save-the-date email this month so you can mark off these dates in April.

    4.    We requested an intern/exchange program where Mangalarga Marchador trainers, riders, vets, college students in equine studies from Brasil could apply and come to the U.S. or Canada for several months or a semester.   The ABCCMM asked us to draft a proposal for them to discuss with their board.

    5.      The ABCCMM would like us to host a Sela de Ouro, a long ride using only Mangalarga Marchadors. We will be talking with the EAMM on how to structure it correctly as they just set their program up last year.   Some riders would qualify to ride in Brasil in 2012 in their Sela de Ouro.   (They would supply a horse for each rider)

    6.   Project Vitrine in the U.S.  This is now a European program of five Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador stallions donated for 2 years for use in presentations and demonstrations promoting the breed.   The ABCCMM will explore this.   What they would require from us was not discussed, since we are not sure it will be possible.

All very exciting ideas, but at this point, just ideas that will need a lot of volunteer work to make them reality.

So, the best news is the media coverage we will receive from the event.    Our thanks to them for coming to Brazil!

The Mangalarga Marchador – a horse without frontiers!  Now it is more true than ever.

    Best Regards,

    John Kelley
