Kate Barcelos, clinic instructor riding Andante (Apple Pie de Miami)
We had a great, great Mangalarga Marchador clinic hosted by Legacy Marchadors over this past weekend, April 6-10. The photo is Kate Barcelos, our Brazilian instructor riding Andante (Apple Pie de Miami) owned by Haras Lucero, TN. Kate flew in from Brazil, assisted by USMMA member Aline Greene who translated Portuguese to English for us.
Kate’s credentials were many, but a few I remember are that she was the #2 dressage rider for all of South America, she is a vet, and she is the first woman technician approved by the ABCCMM to inspect Mangalarga Marchadors in gait and conformation.
We had classroom and riding time, learning with participants from FL, SC, TN, OK, AZ, TX, OR, IN, VA, NC, MO! It was a success on so many levels! Thank you Colin and Megan for all your hard work. And thank you to Bill and Sandy, Rick and Karin for bringing additional Marchadors to ride.
The next MM clinic is already being discussed for March 2012 in Ocala, FL. We hope to see you there!
Next weekend, October 2 and 3rd, is the International Mounted Archery Competition. Eight Mangalarga Marchadors will be the mounts for competitors making it one of the biggest expos of Marchadors in sport we’ve ever had. Go support the US team and meet a Marchador!
For more information on the Oregon event, please read the attached pdf file or contact members Holm and Susan Neumann.
Jorge Ben de Lazy T, owner Kathy Friedman and Dr. Getulio Vieira
The ABCCMM Inspection Visit for 2010 has begun! Dr Getulio Tadeau Vieira arrived in the US from Brazil and begins his 10 day trip cross-country and into Canada today. He will be joined in Montana by Dr Tia Nelson, a US vet in training to become an inspector.
This is the third inspection held for USMMA members who wish to dual register their Mangalarga Marchadors in Brazil with the ABCCMM. At age 3, the horses are inspected by an ABCCMM technician for conformation, gait and temperament.
A total of 12 horses are scheduled to be inspected in five states and one province.
Our website posts member events. Whether it’s a neighborhood gathering or a national show, find events in your local area where you can meet the MANGALARGA MARCHADOR or other USMMA members!
Some of our members are active in annual events and sports like endurance, mounted archery, mounted shooting and calvary competions. The list is quite long, so share your plans with us to get the word out!

Dr. Getulio Vieira rides a young MM gelding for the ABCCMM inspection
Dr. Getulio Tadeau Vieira returns to the US in May to inspect U.S. born Marchador horses. USMMA members who are also members of the ABCCMM wanted to have their horses maintain Brazilian registry as well. The Brazilian association has strict guidelines and it inspects all horses for conformation, gait and temperment at age three before the horses are fully registered. Lynn Kelley is coordinating the effort again and we plan to host our first clinic during the inspection visit as well.
For more information about the inspection process, please read the attached pdf which was an article published after the 2005 inspection. 2005 marked the 1st time an inspection was ever held outside of the Marchador’s native country, Brasil.
