Don’t miss the year’s largest Breyer fan festival July 22-24, 2016. Bring on the feathers and start practicing your samba for the 27th annual BreyerFest at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY.
BreyerFest is the intersection of the real horse world and the model horse hobby – with spectacular equine entertainment, the largest model horse show in the country, the horses that inspired the models and thousands of families and fans for three fabulous days.
The 2016 Celebration horse is Imperador das Aguas, a Mangalarga Marchador stallion imported from Brazil. There is a Breyer model of him made exclusively for the show! Imperador is owned by Claudia Bellandi of C&C Bellandi Horse Racing, Ocala FL. Claudia is taking 3 Marchadors to the event in July where people can meet the Marchador, have a photo op, and see them in the show.
The USMMA will have a display booth there. We could use additional volunteers to man the booth and answer questions. If you have an interest in volunteering to man the booth, please contact Lynn Kelley, lynnkelley@me.com.
If you can’t come, but have a banner, business cards or other handout that you would like displayed or distributed, please send your materials before July 4th, to

The National Horse of Brazil a Southern America treasure will be featured at La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival 2015.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
By HH Sensing – Alessandra Deerinck
October 24th 2015
San Diego County, California Brazilian Saddle Horse aka Mangalarga Marchador to be presented in an educational show at the Holiday Festival, after parading with the AERC Riders Group in the 2015 La Jolla Christmas Parade, on Sunday December 6th 2015 in La Jolla. California
Brazil has been working on creating the “perfect horse” since Napoleon invaded Portugal. Rare in the USA, with 220 horses, the Mangalarga Marchador is one of the largest breeds worldwide, with about 387000 horses in Brazil. It is unlikely that US numbers will grow rapidly. Importing horses from Brazil is a very difficult and costly process because of some diseases endemic for Brazil.
Picture a horse as graceful as an Andalusian and as lively as an Arabian, almost hovering above the ground, looking like a real Pegasus. This is one of Brazil’s prides.
Mangalarga Marchador horses, represent the culmination of centuries of Brazilian breeding strategy to produce the ideal horse by genetics. Their main targets were a special gait and mind, present since birth and not developed by harsh training and crippling techniques, like we see in some other gaited horse breeds, they are the perfect gifts for any rider. The Brazilian Saddle Horse has great versatility, spanning from being a working horse to hunting, doing dressage, jumping, endurance, mounted archery and more.
The 58th Annual La Jolla Christmas Parade and Holiday Festival event will be held December 6th from 1:30pm- 5:00pm (www.ljparade.com ). The Festival includes a number of educational activities and will feature an educational presentation where the public will meet and greet a Mangalarga Marchador, Allegria de Los Cielos, first generation born American Marchador mare, bred by Rancho de Los Cielos in Riverside. This horse has been in training with HH Sensing (www.hhsensing.com ) for the past ten month. In that time she participated in rail shows, trail competitions, cowboy dressage, endurance races and cowboy challenges, and will be in the Rose Tournament Parade 2016, proving one more time that Brazil is on the right track while the American breeders are keeping up the very high standard.
After hearing the talk and watching the demonstration anyone interested is invited to come deepen the meet and greet visiting us at HH Sensing and Rancho de Los Cielos (www.ranchodeloscielos.com).
Worldwide, the breed has encountered the favor of anyone that has approached it. Dear USMMA members.
Rick Schatz has stepped down as USMMA President, citing personal reasons. The resignation is effective immediately.
Rick provided a leadership role during a transition to a new USMMA Board of Directors. He solidified and improved relationships with Brazil and the ABCCMM. However, even though he won’t be serving on the Board, Rick will continue to breed Marchador horses and support our efforts in promoting this magnificent breed. We thank him for his many years of service.
Under the USMMA by-laws, the Vice President assumes that vacated role and a new Vice President will be voted in at our next board meeting.
My wife Michelle and I, breed and own four Marchador horses and just recently moved to Arizona from North Carolina. I have been active in the association for many years and like many of you am passionate about the breed.
While this was unexpected, I am ready to assume the responsibility having served as Vice President and working closely with Rick for 2 years. I met many USMMA members at the two PBR events in 2015 including the Las Vegas clinic. Prior to that, you may have also met me at the 2012 USMMA Clinic in Ocala FL.
Our Board remains intact. The next Board meeting focuses on the budget, planning for a clinic, the registry and more.
2016 will be another exciting year with many Marchador events planned — like the ABCCMM inspection, the USMMA clinic and BREYERFEST at the KY Horse Park which will feature the Mangalarga Marchador!
You will be hearing from me often as we try to keep you informed and involved. I welcome your input on what you need from our association.
Sincerely,
Bill Kambic writes in about an event that he participates in every year with a Marchador entry. Our apologies that this didn’t make the newsletter too!
Please go and cheer them on and enjoy the show!
Event Name: National Cavalry Competition
Location: Historic Fort Reno, El Reno, OK
Dates: 23-27 SEP 2015
Description:
The National Cavalry Competition commemorates the long and distinguished history of the U.S. Cavalry from the Dragoons of the Revolutionary War to the mounted Special Forces soldiers serving even today in Afghanistan and elsewhere. There are four major events. Military Horsemanship demonstrates the basic riding skills of the mounted soldier. Military Field Jumping allows the mounted soldier to demonstrate theirjumping abilities. Unique to this competition are two weapons classes. The Mounted Saber class has the soldier “riding the heads” using the blade. The Mounted Pistol class has the soldier demonstrating marksmanship using the .45 caliber revolver and blank ammunition. There are several events
demonstrating other aspects of military horsemanship. Competition is open to anyone who wishes to participate. Of course all work and no play makes for dull troopers. So there are also a number of good parties and social events!
“Every August, Saskatoon Saskatchewan, .Canada hosts a fairly large parade through downtown. I have participated for many years.
Last year I assembled a variety of horse breeds from around the world and entered a mounted group. It was very well received by the audience. Authentic costumes to represent the breed and very professional grooming and presentation by all involved.
What a great way to showcase the Mangalarga Marchador in Portuguese show costume. Our entry won second place this year against many other horse-related entries.”

Dr. Kate Barcelos was in Canada presenting her paper at an Equine Conference and stayed on to complete another ABCCMM inspection, the second one in Canada!
Dana Johnsen, USMMA Board Member at Large, organized an Open House around the event and Marchadors from Alberta and British Columbia joined in! Additional invitations and participation from people who wanted to see, meet and ride a Marchador. It looked like a great event.
Kate also visited other breeders in Colorado, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan before heading home to Brazil.
ABCCMM inspection is a prerequisite for dual ABCCMM (Brazilian) registration. It is not required for USMMA registration.
I had a great time meeting everyone and learning a lot at the clinic! For those of you who attended, please take a photo of your horse with his or her ribbon if he/she earned one. AND please, write down 1 or 2 things you learned during the clinic! It would really be great to read!
Lori Silcher, 4 Seasons Marchadores, MT, last year’s winner on her stallion, Baluarte Piry (Bali) was there at our Awards Banquet, so she was able to present personally the Lucas Guerra Award to the 2014 winner: Flying Oaks, Rusty Parks and Flying Oaks Zodiac.
This year we also had a special surprise adding cash awards for the Show Champion ($100), Champion Mare ($50), Champion Gelding ($50), and Champion Stallion ($50). The cash awards this year were sponsored by Future Foal – Summerwind. Next year, I plan to add to this concept for more or bigger prizes!
The grand finale for the clinic classroom was Rusty Parks, a trainer, cracking bull whips atop a 3 year old Marchador mare, Flying Oaks Athena, who has just been started under saddle. about a month ago. Now that speaks to the temperament of the Mangalarga Marchador!
Here are the results of the fun competition and informative evaluations. (Some horses did not compete in all events)

I hope you are as excited as I am about the 2015 USMMA Clinic which will move back to the East Coast! I will announce the dates early on, so you can plan on meeting me and my horses there!
The 2014 USMMA Clinic was held at Horseman’s Park, in Las Vegas, Nevada October 20-23rd.It was the first clinic held in a “destination location” and the logistics provided a lot of learning even before the clinic started. We held the clinic in Las Vegas, so that we could have volunteers and members also participate in the PBR events for the Marchador sponsored by APEX/ABCCMM Brazil.Because of that synergy, many members were also able to meet the PBR sponsors, ABCCMM representatives and more USMMA Members, their Marchador horses (4 Seasons, Lazy T, Bellandi Racing Stables) and the press from Horse and Rider covering the MM breed for an upcoming issue.
I would like to thank several USMMA Members for stepping up and taking on sometimes daunting assignments. Jeff Bosley, USMMA VP and Clinic Coordinator.Jeff was always there with a smile and “what can I do to help” attitude.Much appreciated and a great job Jeff. Jeff will be overseeing next year’s clinic too – held on the East Coast.Lynn Kelley, USMMA Treasurer.Lynn set up the budget, the insurance and handled sign-ups and fees. With a slim budget, she also took a lot of photos to document the event when we decided hiring a photographer was not in the budget.Laurie Klassen, USMMA Secretary, handled much of the communications about the clinic in the early stages of planning.Karin Roberts, USMMA member, took on all the food and event planning like the awards dinner which was excellent! Jim Hannah, USMMA member, took on arranging, coordinating and even providing additional horses for the trail ride.Everyone loved the ride, Jim! Aline Greene, USMMA member, once again providing us with translation support and other help whenever we asked.
A special thank you to all that brought horses to the clinic: Jake Martinez and Theresa Longo, Bill and Sandy Dory and myself.
Once there at the clinic, Rusty Parks, my trainer from Oklahoma was a welcome help to everyone, and always with a smile. So many people volunteered to help during the clinic – everyone really was appreciated and made this event work out as a rewarding experience for all.
The ABCCMM, Brazil again contributed a fine instructor and great judge for the event:Kate Barcelos and Tiago Garcia.Thank you!
The USMMA financially subsidized the clinic and made it financially feasible.
USMMA members came from Alberta and British Columbia, Canada: Sandy and Bill Dory, Patty Horner, Blake Holtman, (AB) and Gena Rome (BC).
USMMA members came from coast to coast in the U.S. From North Carolina, Jeff Bosley. From South Carolina, Aline Greene. From Missouri, Karin Roberts. From Oklahoma, Rick Schatz and Rusty Parks. From Texas, Cathy Pierce. From Arizona, Lynn Kelley. From Utah, Valarie Giacalone. From Nevada, Jim Hannah and some of his friends. From Montana, Tresa Smith. From California, Linda Holst, Jake Martinez, Theresa Longo, Alessandra Deerinck and Kendall Melline.
We are so fortunate to have such great members that love their Marchador horses! We all had a good time meeting each other, learning from our experts and each other and seeing and riding new Marchadors that came to the clinic or for the PBR.
I hope you will enjoy the clinic photos, announcements and magazine articles as they are posted on the USMMA website.I look forward to next year and meeting more members!
Sweet Flying Oaks Athena with owner Rick Schatz riding bareback.
