  • Arizona Horse Fair March 29-31 Canceled

The organizers of the Arizona Horse Fair (formerly the MANE EVENT) announced today that the event will not take place.

The USMMA was scheduled to have a booth at this event in Scottsdale AZ as it has in the past 2 years. We are sorry that the show is not going on.

We will be looking, as always, to find other venues where we can promote the Mangalarga Marchador breed. Please contact us if you have an event or show in your area that you would like us to consider.

  • 2019 Membership Drive Underway!

It’s time for our membership renewal drive!   Please consider joining or renewing your membership in the USMMA again in 2019!

You are a member of a small, elite, passionate group that own, breed or just love Marchador horses.  Our mission is to promote and protect the Mangalarga Marchador breed here in North America.    The USMMA is the official Mangalarga Marchador organization recognized by the Brazilian Association, the ABCCMM.

We started the year with 94 members and ended with 123, our highest membership to date.   We have $10,000 in our bank account.  In 2018, we spent money on the following items:

Registration (incl UCDAVIS fees) 29% Website  23% Events 20% Show Subsidies 13% Advertising     9% Office, Postage, fees  6%

One of our events was the MANE EVENT in March 2018.   Over 30 members came to the event (from 7 states and 3 countries) and 7 Marchador horses represented our association and breed there.   Horse Illustrated ran an article on the breed and the USMMA and other breeders advertised in that issue.   We coordinated and planned an ABCCMM inspection trip for our members that want dual registration.   In addition, we published our own USMMA Marchador Quarterly Journal with the help of editor Tresa Smith and publisher Lynn Kelley.   We gave out $500 in show subsidy awards administered by Laurie Klassen.   Randy Conilogue, our Registrar, has served the association well with quality work and attention to detail.  Randy also gave his time creating Marchador promotional videos that are now uploaded to YOUTUBE.   The USMMA board is an all-volunteer board working on your behalf.  (Jeff Bosley, President, Cathy Pierce, Vice President, Tia Nelson, Secretary, Lynn Kelley, Treasurer, Jake Martinez, Rick Schatz and Aline Greene)

In 2019, we are planning for more events including the Equine Affaire in Springfield MA and a Marchador riding weekend in Montana.   We hope we will be able to reach more people and see more members with our planned functions!  Tell us what you would like to see happening in 2019.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm!   Your dues make it possible.   JOIN TODAY by visiting this website page.

  • Horse Illustrated features the Mangalarga Marchador

The Mangalarga Marchador was the breed profile in the August edition of Horse Illustrated. There are some errors in their reporting but we are happy to have the publicity! The errors are in the breed standard and in the dates the first Marchadors were imported into the US. We are writing a letter to the editor with the correct information and hope they will be able to publish it in a future edition.

Here are the pages for the Marchador article and ad listings.

    Best regards,

  • USMMA Videos out on Youtube

    Dear USMMA Members:

In January, Randy Conilogue, our USMMA Registrar, volunteered for an important project.   To create a video show that would run on a large screen TV during the Mane Event the first weekend in April 2018.   He created 14 videos.    It was a great success!  Many USMMA members contributed new photos and we also used photos that we had in our archives and website from years past.

The result of this effort is also available for running on an iPad or computer by contacting Randy.    You can use the videos to showcase the breed at a booth or presentation.   At the Mane Event, we ran a continuous loop so there was always a beautiful Mangalarga Marchador on the screen.   It attracted a lot of attention and viewers.

Take a look!    We have created a youtube account and uploaded the videos there.   There are 14 videos with the photos grouped into categories.   We are also creating a playlist of other videos from Brazil that showcase the beauty and movement of the MM breed.
Thank you Randy, for such a great job.

    Jeff Bosley
    USMMA President

    p.s.
If you would like to share your newest photos, or if you have not yet contributed to our collection, here are the guidelines for submission:

Sending us photos for the USMMA website or videos:

    1. Horses need to be registered with the USMMA or the ABCCMM to be included in the video.

    2. Photos need to be high resolution and JPEG files. That is determined by the number of pixels and the size of the file. JPEG files should be at least 1M if they are truly high resolution.

    3. Photos should be labeled with the following information: USMMA Registration Name of the Marchador, Owner Name, Farm Name (if applicable), State or Province and Photographer credit (if applicable.)

    4. We would prefer photos to be a horizontal format. Showing vertical photos on a large screen TV is not as attractive. We would like to fill the screen.

    5. We would like to get photos of EVERY single Marchador in North America to be showcased in our video. However, the video producer, Randy Conilogue will decide if your submission can be used. We will make every effort to work with you to help you create or find photos of your horse that we can use.

    6. Please email photos to drrlc@aol.com. If you have a large number of files, you can use dropbox.com and just email the link to your photos to Randy.

    7. OPTIONAL – you can also send us video, but most video is not high enough quality to air on a large screen.

  • ABCCMM (Brazilian Registry) Inspection Planning

    Dear USMMA Members:

Tia Nelson, Haras Vista da Serra,   has requested an ABCCMM (Brazilian MM association) inspection in MONTANA during the last week of June.    We are sending out this notification to facilitate coordination with our members who may also need an ABCCMM inspection to double register their Marchador horses with that association.   Coordinating with this first inspection could save money in transportation fees for you if the timing works for you.   If June does not work, we also know that other USMMA/ABCCMM members in Arizona are planning another inspection trip later during the fall and we will keep you apprised of any inspection visit dates in order to make this process easier for you.
We are fortunate to have an ABCCMM inspector Dr. George Vilar, here in the US, in Florida.   Any ABCCMM member can request an inspection visit from him at any time of their own convenience.  His email is dr.georgevilar@hotmail.com.
The USMMA does not require inspection of Marchadors for registration.  However, we believe the ABCCMM inspection process is a valuable tool in evaluating and preserving the quality of the Marchador breed, especially for breeding animals.   And a number of North American breeders and owners carry both the USMMA registration and the ABCCMM registration on their horses, so we assist in this and in other cooperative efforts with the Brazilian association.
The first document 2018 ABCCMM inspection memo describes the ABCCMM registration and inspection process.
The second document lists the North American Marchador horses that might be ready for ABCCMM inspection as of this moment.   This list does not list all the MM horses that may be ABCCMM ELIGIBLE, so if you have horses or details to add, please let us know.
Please reply before June 8th  if you would like to participate in this inspection visit, but the sooner, the better.    More details and scheduling will occur with the individual members who sign up.
    Randy Conilogue, USMMA Registrar
    Lynn Kelley, ABCCMM liaison
  • Tia Nelson Elected USMMA Secretary

The USMMA special election for Secretary was concluded this week.   Thank you for participating and voting!

We had 2 members who volunteered and the voting was very close.   I am happy to announce that Dr. Tia Nelson, DVM was elected as Secretary and will start immediately!   Congratulations Tia!

Our second candidate Dinusha Perera has offered to serve as well on a sub-committee or project.   We are extremely fortunate to have great members who volunteer to work together to spread the word about the Mangalarga Marchador!

    Thank you!
    Best regards,
    Jeff Bosley
    USMMA President
  • Breed Opportunity for the Marchador

    Dear USMMA members,

I  have something I would like to share with all of you.

Because of my horse training business, I have spoken about the Mangalarga Marchador breed to a Professor from the University of Kentucky. This contact has developed into another  one from a different institution. I have been contacted by Professor Guest and Mattfeld,  from the University of British Columbia about a very interesting, and innovative project about humanity and horses.

The Mangalarga Marchador breed is being considered to be part of the opening launch of the database, and they asked me to be the primary contact for the USMMA.

    The Project
Breed: The Making of Modern Identity
    —structured in three sections :

    1. The development of a partnerships with breed organizations that will help identify and acquire content for a free, online database of digitized documents related to breed history that will serve scholars, breed organizations, breeders/breed enthusiasts, and the general public.
    2. Scholarly publications that stimulate scholarship of equine breed, and help consolidate an international network of scholars. The first part is a collection of essays about equine breed, that is currently being developed

    3. A traveling museum exhibit that will serve the interests of both scholars and breed organizations, promoting public interest both in specific breeds, and in the historical interconnection, and development of horse and human identity.
They have partnered with a museum for this aspect of the project, to allow teachers to visit with classes, and then “teach” issues raised by the exhibit in the classroom. The database will be one of the resources for the historical material.

At the moment the project is in the very initial stage, which is building content for the database.
The initial phase is a collection of data, and the assembly of a database about the equine breeds.

The first type of documents they are seeking for are:
    – History of the breed or of key moments (decisions about standards or designation of foundation lines; movement of the breed globally; debate about the direction the breed should take)
    – Primary documents related to any of the above (correspondence, charters.etc)
    – Articles from breed newsletters
    – Oral history from breeders, registrars etc.
    – Deliberations about new influences ( artificial insemination, bridging distance while maintaining standards, new areas of performance and competition)
    – Any material addressing the cultural significance and participation of the breed in Brazilian society now or in the past.

If any of you is able to contribute to this project, you can respond to this email and I will put you in touch with the Professors so you can directly send them your contribution.

I really appreciate all you can do and look forward to hearing from who is interested in contributing to this project

    Sincerely,

    Alessandra Deerinck
    USMMA Vice President
