  • Montana Cavalgada 2019

Thanks to Dr Tia Nelson and Derek Brown, our hosts for the event, the weekend ran without a hitch. USMMA members traveled from AZ, CO, FL, MN, MT, OR, PA, UT, TX, and SC to attend.

The USMMA 2019 Mangalarga Marchador Gathering was held at the historic Haras Vista da Serra Ranch in the breathtaking mountains of Montana, home to about 30 Marchador horses. Just being here was special.

Two independent events were held during an extended weekend of August 15th to the 18th.

The first two days, was the ABCCMM (Brazilian) inspection process with Dr. George Vilar, a vet and inspector from Brazil. The ABCCMM inspection process examines the conformation, the gait and the temperament of the Mangalarga Marchador according to the breed standard. There are two inspections and we held both: 1.) a foal inspection (for ABCCMM provisional registration); and 2.) a 3 year old riding inspection (for ABCCMM definitive registration). After the 3 year old riding inspection, the Marchadors will be dual registered with the USMMA and the ABCCMM. After the definitive registration, the Marchador is branded with the trademarked Horseshoe M Brand. During each inspection, there was time for discussion and questions about an individual horse or the Marchador breed.

The second two days are the Marchador Cavalgadas (a long ride). Haras Vista da Serra provided a list of Marchadors available to ride and their assessment of the riding skill required for each horse. Many of these horse were mares with foals at their side. The foals were ponied by the riders and it all worked out so well. A few members brought and rode their own horses in the mountains of Montana!

A cavalgada is portuguese for a long trail ride, very popular in Brazil. In Brazil, there are many, many riders often followed by a barbeque and party. We did the same! Saturday night had a wonderful pot luck dinner with the USMMA members and neighbors from nearby ranches. A band and lights strung in the trees made the whole experience magical.

The Mangalarga Marchador is the National Horse of Brazil. Our event honored their heritage in every detail – riding with with friends and having fun with a Marchador.

  • Show Subsidy Awarded to Dana Johnsen

Dana Johnsen was awarded a $250 show subsidy award for her participation in the 2019 Canadian National Andalusian show with her Marchador mare Valentim-Beijo Fazenda Zouga Dana and Valentim performed demos of the gaits and abilities of the Marchador breed to these Iberian horse lovers during the show. It was a great opportunity to introduce the breed at a prestigious event.

AUGUST 15-18! COME TO MONTANA AND RIDE MANGALARGA MARCHADORS!!!

What could be better?   The USMMA is planning a multi-day event at Haras Vista da Serra, located near Helena Montana.  Tia Nelson, DVM has offered her beautiful ranch for the venue.

There will be a mix of opportunities for education, riding and social gatherings.   More information will be coming your way about costs, hotels, and details as the days are developed!   You do have an opportunity to bring your own horse to ride or to put your name in to be a rider on one of the available MMs at the event.    Put the dates in your calendar and think about coming – we would love to see you there!

August 15 – arrival and start of ABCCMM inspection   If you have never seen an ABCCMM inspection, it is a worthwhile and valuable learning experience.  Foals and 3 years olds are inspected by ABCCMM inspector George Vilar.

August 16 – more arrivals and finish of ABCCMM inspection.  Perhaps demos of selected MMs.   Social event that evening.

August 17 – meet and match the Marchadors and riders.   Cavalgadas during the day (there may be multiple rides)   Cavalgada means long rides, but we may plan some easier, shorter rides as well.   Breakfast on your own, but lunch will be provided.  Social event that evening.

    August 18 – Wrap-up, departures.

For more information now, contact the event committee chairs – Tia Nelson drnelson@valleyvethelena.comand Cathy Pierce cpierce@stx.rr.com. If you are thinking you will be there, send them an email!

  • Member Directory Update

In March, we sent out an email survey asking members if they wanted to be included in a new MEMBER DIRECTORY.   We promised to share the results or our survey.   If you missed the survey, click on this link here.

Here are the results: 36 members responded YES.

We are assuming that if a member did not respond, that their response is NO.   There is still time to get included if you missed the survey email.
Because of the positive response we will be publishing a MEMBER DIRECTORY of the members who responded yes.   We will also update the Breeder’s Directory and distribute both in April.

In future USMMA membership drives, we will add a check box to be included in the member directory simplifying the process and publish earlier.

Thank you for participating and sharing.

    Best regards,

    Jeff Bosley USMMA Presidentpaboz24@gmail.com

  • USMMA Member Directory Survey

The USMMA already produces a BREEDER’S LIST to give out at events and to anyone contacting us via the website.   Attached is last year’s breeder’s list.   We are currently updating this for 2019.   If you have recently become a Mangalarga Marchador breeder, please let us know if you want to be on this list.

This year, we would also like to produce a printed MEMBER DIRECTORY.   Our intent is share the information to promote the opportunities for local people to meet and share information about their horses.    However, we also want to protect your privacy and recognize that these days giving out personal information is risky.    The MEMBER DIRECTORY will only be shared with other USMMA members who request it along with our request that it not be shared or used for solicitation purposes.  We would include:

Member NAME, ADDRESS, CELL PHONE, EMAIL

Please let us know if you would like a member directory and if you would like your information to be included.   PLEASE RESPOND BY MARCH 15, 2019.
