  • BYLAW CHANGES PROPOSED

This is the memo that went out. We have overwhelming support for the new ideas, but some questions and concerns. The Board is working on clarification and addressing these concerns. There will probably be another memo with the responses to the questions. These bylaw changes are still in review as our process requires 2 BOD meetings for review and approval.

The USMMA Board and I propose the following changes to our USMMA bylaws after reviewing the recommendations of the 2019 Bylaws Committee. These laws cannot be substantively changed without communicating the changes to the membership and they also require 2 board meetings with a vote at each meeting before they are adopted. The actual proposed bylaws are at the bottom of the email, but here is the quick read of the changes.

REMOVE TERM LIMITS – The thought is not to keep people on the Board forever, but to keep moving ahead with experienced people allowed to stay on, and to accept volunteers that want to work for the breed involved. Our current bylaw requires a one-year absence after a Board member has served 8 years.
ELECTION COMMITTEE – Form a committee to try to get new people involved and always have a choice on the ballot. If qualified candidates are recruited then the term limits will not become an issue.
REGIONAL BOARD – Switch BOARD MEMBER AT LARGE to a REGIONAL DIRECTORS flair. They would help the regions develop, hold events, form committees or groups in their region and get more going in every area. The Regional Director should bring matters back to the FULL BOARD and if any good ideas work at a regional level perhaps we can adopt them at a national level. If this works out and we continue to grow as a membership, then I would see the Regional Director getting money allocated to the region to spend each year. Not every region needs to have a Director if there is no interest or qualified candidates from that area. (Currently, we have USMMA OFFICERS (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Registrar) and USMMA Board Members At Large.)

We’d like to hear from you before MARCH 10! Here is what we would like:Any questions or concerns about the changes, including if you oppose the change. If you like the change and wish to run for the Regional Director position.

You can send your feedback to me or to any board member that you feel comfortable with. We would prefer to have that feedback in writing just so it makes it easier to compile the comments so we can address them and discuss them at the next board meeting.
We may have an another bylaw email similar to this one if your feedback and the board discussion generates new ideas or proposed modifications to our existing recommended bylaw changes.

    Best regards,
    Jeff Bosley, USMMA President

The full copy of the bylaw wording proposal is in BOLD below. If you wish to compare to the original bylaws, they can be found on the USMMA website.

Bylaw 302 – CompositionSection 1. The Board of Directors The Board of Directors consists of the following Officers of the Association: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and Registrar. There will be 3-7 Regional Directors representing different sections of the U.S. and Canada. The regions are: Pacific, Northwest, Southwest, Midwest, Northeast, Southeast and Canada.

To be considered for any Officer or Board Position, the individual must be an active FULL member or LIFE member for at least 60 days before the election, and be a USMMA-registered Marchador owner at the time of the election.. Each Board member must remain an active voting member of the USMMA for the duration of their term. Each Board member has one vote. (updated January 2012)
Section 2. Term The term of an individual elected to fill a position referred to in Section 1 of this bylaw at the annual meeting of the Board of Directors, who is elected for a full term and not to fill a vacancy, begins that term immediately after the adjournment of the meeting at which the individual was elected. An individual elected or appointed to fill a vacancy takes office immediately upon the election or appointment.

Section 3. Term Limits. A term will span 4 years. There are no term limits as long as the individual is willing to volunteer and is deemed capable to fill the position. Each Board Member and Officer must submit their name to the Election Committee to be placed on the ballot and be elected by the members every four years.

Section 4: Succession The Vice President shall succeed the President should the President resign during the term. The Vice President position should it become vacant because of succession or resignation shall be a Board member elected by the Board for the remainder of the term. The vacant Board position is then filled using the Special Election process.

Section 5. USMMA Technical Board. Beginning in 2009 The USMMA Board of Directors will be assisted by a USMMA Technical Board. The Technical Board will consist of the Registrar and the Web Site Master with other technical positions to be added with the consent of the Board of Directors. The board will harness on an on-going basis the knowledge and expertise of experts to advise the Board of Directors on technical matters. Board members will be approved by the President with the approval of the Board of Directors and will not be subject to term limits. The board will serve at the pleasure of a President who could remove a member only if there were just cause for removal. With a change in President, an automatic appointment of the same technical board would be assumed unless there was a just cause for removal. (August 2009 Amend)
Bylaw 303 – Election of Officers and Directors

Section 1. Schedule Year beginning January 2005, the term is one year for the Board of Directors. Beginning in January 2006 and every fourth year thereafter, the Officers will be up for election. The first election of the Regional Directors shall be 2020, Officers and Board Members shall serve four years or until successor is elected.
By majority of vote, the Board of Directors can remove a Director for non-fulfillment of duties or for the same reasons for rescission of membership.

Section 2 Special Election Special Elections to replace Officers or Directors shall be held within 90 days of time of need.

Section 3 Election Committee An Election Committee of 3 members will be formed during the election year to fill the slate of candidates for the election. At least one past USMMA President shall be on the Committee. Every effort should be made to find new members to run and to have more than one choice for every office on the ballot. Every position except for Registrar will be up for re-election every four years.

    Bylaw 304 – Meetings

Section 1. Meetings. USMMA Officers shall meet or report monthly. Regional Board Members will be welcome to attend and may be requested to attend based on the meeting agenda. The Full Board (Officers and the Regional Board of Directors shall meet at least twice each year, including at the annual meeting of USMMA and at least one other occasion during each year at a location and date to be fixed by the Board. The President shall have the power to call a meeting of the Board of Directors of USMMA at any time and must call a meeting when requested in writing to do so by one-third or more of the members of the Regional Board of Directors.

Section 2. Quorum At all meetings of the Full Board of Directors fifty percent of its Board members shall constitute a quorum. In the event that a quorum shall not be present at an annual meeting, such meeting shall be adjourned by the chair to a future date.

Section 3. Participation in Meetings via Conference Call. The Board of Directors may participate in the Annual Meeting or other Meeting of the Board by means of a conference telephone or similar communications equipment which allows all persons participating in the meeting to hear each other at the same time. Participation by such means shall constitute presence in person at a meeting for purposes of establishing a Quorum or to transact and to vote on any business.

Section 4. Notice of Meetings Notice of the Annual Meeting or other meetings of the Board shall be made at least 45 days prior to the meeting via postal mail or email to each member.

(April 2007) Major bylaw changes that impact breed standards , registry and membership require 2 board meetings for approval and that such proposed bylaw changes be communicated to the entire USMMA Membership before the second board meeting.

  • 2020 Membership Drive

It’s time for our annual membership drive! We’d like for you to join us in 2020!   Your renewal is critical because it sustains our organization to govern, register, protect and promote the Mangalarga Marchador breed in North America.

Lynn Kelley and Tresa Smith are the membership coordinators. We are running our drive a little differently this year so you can renew now or at any time before your renewal month.

In addition, this year, we are asking 2 new questions:

    1. Do you wish for your contact information to be shared with the membership in our MEMBER DIRECTORY?
    2. What is your preferred method of contact? EMAIL or TEXT

The easiest way to join is to go to this webpage  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/membership/member/ and fill out the on-line form to renew, or print the pdf file and mail the form and your check to us.

The USMMA is the official Mangalarga Marchador organization recognized by the Brazilian MM Association, the ABCCMM. In 2019, we were approved to be an ABCCMM nucleo, able to hold official ABCCMM events developed for the MM breed. We developed a new Mangalarga Marchador breed video that will be posted on youtube.com soon.

Here are some of the plans for 2020! We start off in January with a Marchador horse show in Scottsdale, AZ with trail rides and a sports competition.   We publish the MM community news in the USMMA Quarterly Journal and on the website.. In August, we sponsor a Marchador Cavalgada in Montana. We’d also like to have more events regionally, but that all depends on local participation and interest.  We are searching for one or two major equine events to exhibit our breed – similar to the Equine Affaire that was so successful for us in November 2019.  We are looking for and adding some member benefits in discount programs. The first to come is Riding Warehouse where USMMA members will receive a 15% discount when using our coupon code.  More information will follow in January about this new benefit.

Throughout the year, we support members with registrations, transfers and our show subsidy and “meet the Marchador” cash awards. We continue to look for press opportunities and ways to get the word out about the breed. Horse Illustrated features the breed in their January issue, as an example. We are exploring relationships with other breed associations too as a way to get more opportunities to showcase our horses. And we hope to set up a USMMA Mangalarga Marchador store with logo’d items that help publicize the breed every day with what you wear or what you drive.
Please help us make this the best year ever! Send us your thoughts and ideas. Send in your photos or stories for the Journal. AND JOIN US!

    Best regards,Jeff Bosley, USMMA President

The Trail Rides (Cavalgadas) are right outside the door of the 17 Ranch in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve  This is an area comprising over 30,000 acres and beautiful desert scenery and wildlife. The trail system is well marked and measured for people to use, whether they are hiking, biking or horse-back riding. In some areas on the trail, there are elevations where the views extend for many miles.

The Marchador Competition will be a learning experience for both horses and riders! As such, we have scheduled a practice session on Saturday so that we may get familiar with the classes and perhaps, the horse you ride. You may decide to judge your practice session and that would be allowed as a time in the finals.

We are choosing classes for the SPORTS competitions of the Mangalarga Marchador breed. The classes that may be Barrels, Poles, the Marchador Ideal Functional Test (Obstacles) or Working Equitation. We are deciding on the categories too! We can classify novice horse and/or novice rider, classes by sex or gait of the horse, professional vs amateur, senior riders etc etc… Stay tuned! The next communication will outline the classes and the rules from the ABCCMM.

The competition will be judged by Dr. George Vilar, our ABCCMM inspector. George spent time in Brazil in November becoming a certified judge (Arbitro de Esporte) for the sports competitions.

Sunday will be planned based on the interest and the responses of the people coming to the event. We will be having an ABCCMM inspection at Silver Stables on Sunday. But whether or not we do another ride or barn tour will be up to you.

There will be horses there to ride. For the competition, we may need to share, but our count right now is about 10 horses that are available. You are also welcome to bring your own horse.

    Event Cost:

For Friday and Saturday events the cost is $50 for USMMA members to ride and participate in the planned events. Non-USMMA members will be charged $100 per day as they will need to become USMMA members to participate. Spectators are allowed to watch and come for free! Unless they also want food….- then the charge will be $20. For the detailed cost breakdown, please refer to the sign-up sheets.

Sunday is an OPTIONAL day. We will wait to see how many people want to participate, but as of right now, we are assuming that day is a no-charge day. (Cost for the use of a horse to ride may be extra.)

You are welcome to stay longer, or to just tour Scottsdale on this optional day.  www.experiencescottsdale.com/maps-guides/

Price includes all activities plus lunch on Friday and Saturday, the pool party, and the ribbons and awards for the competition winners. Water and snacks to be provided at the event during the day. The USMMA may hire a professional photographer for Saturday.

    Driving:

Driving directions to Scottsdale, AZ and the 17 Ranch, use Google Maps.

    Closest Airports:

The closest major airport is the Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. Airport code PHX. All major airlines fly there. Other airports include the Phoenix-MESA airport also sometimes called GATEWAY . Airlines that use that airport are WESTJET, and ALLEGIANT. Airport code AZA or IWA. If you are flying, please let us know your flight information.

    Hotels/Houses for Rent:

We have 3 guest casitas at the 17 Ranch available for rental on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with check out on Sunday at 11 a.m. These casitas are one bedroom but sleep 4 (couch) and rent for $200 a night. One of these casitas is already spoken for, leaving 2 available. There is a full kitchen, pool and hot tub. Photos of the casitas are at the end of this document.

Scottsdale Hotels are all of the major chains: Marriott, Holiday Inn, Hilton etc. Look for places to stay on the east side of town, close to the airport for example.

You can also look for AIRBNB or VRBO rentals. The closest ones to the 17 Ranch will be in Rio Verde, AZ or North Scottsdale. Some USMMA participants are offering a spare bedroom to outside participants and some USMMA participants may plan to rent an AIRBNB house for the event. If you are interested in sharing a house, please indicate this on your sign-up form and we will try to make the connections.

    Camping/RVs:

We have not found any hookups for trailers / RVs as yet during that timeframe – they are already reserved. However, dry camping hookups are available at my boarding facility OutWest Stallion Station at no charge, and for $15 per night at Paul Dietz Horsemanship. Please let us know on the form if we should reserve a spot for you.

    Bringing Horses:

We would love it if you will bring your Marchador horses! All horses from out of state must have a current Coggins and Health Certificate.

Stabling can be arranged at the ranch in a barn or in temporary pens at the 17 Ranch and at OutWest Stallion Station (a few miles away). The cost will be $20 per day for the bedding, feed etc. Please indicate if you will need a stall or pen. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We have 5 stalls reserved in our name for now.

    WEATHER:

Of course, we are hoping for fabulous weather! We do have a covered arena, just in case. The temperatures in January on average are 65 as the high and 45 as the low.

    SIGN UP FORM:

Attached to this email and also on the USMMA website. Please sign up as soon as possible as it will help you get the best rates for travel and help us plan the event.

    USMMA WAIVER:

Attached to this email and also on the USMMA website. All participants must sign the waiver.

  • Save the dates! AZ MM EVENT!

    WHEN:   JANUARY 24 – 26, 2020
PLACE:   17 RANCH, SCOTTSDALE AZ 85262
    WHAT:  FIRST ANNUAL SCOTTSDALE SHOW

WHO: We have just started planning this event!.   I am chairing the committee and asking members to join that committee now.    We will work on the details and get a memo out to you before Thanksgiving with more.
DETAILS:  We will be having trail rides into the desert and ABCCMM Sport Competitions.    Here are the initial thoughts of what will be happening!

We have reserved an covered arena and 3 one-bedroom guest casitas for the event.  An additional apartment is also available at this time, but will rent soon.    There are horse facilities there for a limited number of horses but lots of facilities close by if we need more.   There are no trailer hook-ups at that facility, but there are some nearby.    We also have several members in the Scottsdale area and hopefully some of them also will offer accommodations.   There are a LOT of hotels and other options in this area as well.

Arizona has about 20 Mangalarga Marchadors here and that number swells with winter visitors from Canada.  It may also be that there will be MM horses you can use here available if you’d like to learn and ride, but can’t bring a horse.  That will be determined.

Show entry fees, audit fees and casita rental fees will be charged.    While the USMMA underwrites each event we hold,  the fees will help fund the awards we give, the food and refreshments for our participants.   Only USMMA members are allowed to ride because of insurance, but we will invite friends, family and neighbors to come to watch!   It will be a fun event!
    Dr. George Vi

lar, our ABCCMM inspector, is in Brazil this month training to be a judge for the competition.  Lynn Kelley has the Sport Classes Rules and Regulations (working equitation / functional test, barrels, pole bending etc) being translated in Brazil.   We will get those out as soon as possible to all members.

    • Thursday January 23 – available for arrival and check in
    • Friday January 24 – am trail ride for those who come early.
    • January 24 – noon lunch, check in and pm training sessions on the competition
    • Saturday January 25 – am and pm, MM classes yet to be selected, pm pool party
    • Sunday January 26 – OPTIONAL DAY You can leave or stay for a trail ride and/or MM barn tours in the morning.  Checkout is 11 am.   pm  ABCCMM inspection.

    PLANNING:

Scottsdale is close to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and is also serviced by Mesa Airport and Scottsdale Airport.    It is a major hub so airline tickets should be reasonable.   Scottsdale is jumping during the winter months.  For information about what else is going on, you can visit https://www.experiencescottsdale.com/

We hope you will be able to make this event!    We will fill in the details in just a few weeks.   We would like to have more events in 2020 as well so if you have an idea for your area, please contact me.

    Sincerely, Jeff Bosley, paboz24@gmail.com

USMMA President and Scottsdale Committee chair

  • EQUINE AFFAIRE RECAP

We had a tremendous event experience at the Equine Affaire in Springfield MA on November 7 through November 10.

The USMMA had our first presence at this event this year.     This was a huge show with large crowds every day!   New England is great horse country and we took the opportunity to try to boost our numbers there in the region.   There are 2 Mangalarga Marchadors in New England: one in Maine, a gelding named Chama Lustre do Lucero with Cyndy Falvey an one in Massachusetts, a 3 year old mare named Rio Dulce de los Cielos with Tom Marcos of Tom’s Horsemanship.   Tom and Dulce came to the show!   “Dulce” as she is called had just shipped late this summer from Rancho de los Cielos, Riverside, CA all across the country.    Tom brought her to the expo and she did everything she was asked, even though it was all new to her.    Not yet started under saddle, her demo times were all done in hand, and she attracted many admirers.   We encouraged people to visit Dulce in the barn and of course, when she stayed with us at the USMMA booth.  She was a big hit there – very sweet, very pretty and loved the people who visited!

Lynn Kelley, our Treasurer. was the lead for the event.   Lynn will be writing more about the event in the USMMA Quarterly journal with even more photos.   The USMMA created and manned a 10 x 20 booth in the BREED BUILDING. The booth consisted of tables with flyers, business cards and information to hand out, a 10 x 10 movie screen and a 10 x 10 horse stall.   We estimate that about 1,000 people came through the breed building and stopped at the booth.    Only a handful of people had ever heard about the Mangalarga Marchador breed so we talked to a lot of people!    We created Marchador bags with information that we gave to people who were interested in learning more.   Breeders and members had submitted business cards and flyers and we had printed our USMMA brochure of FAQs about the Marchador breed and our 2019 USMMA Breeder’s List.    We handed out over 150 of these bags!

Of the 150 people who took the Marchador bags, some of them gave us their contact information for the raffle and a follow-up call or email.    Lynn Kelley will be heading that effort as well.   We promised only one contact unless they wanted more information.   Lynn’s idea is to create a classified ad sheet of Marchador horses that are for sale to be able to send to these people if they are actually looking for a MM horse or foal.   If you choose to participate and list your horses for sale, Lynn will also create a classified ad for you on the USMMA website.    The classifieds on our website are free for USMMA members and it would be a good place to point people when they are looking.    If you are interesting in adding your horse to the classifieds, please send the following information and Lynn needs it BY NOVEMBER 25, if possible.   (The offer to add your horse on the website is open – Lynn will do it at any time or you can do it yourself with a login – there is no time limit).   If you already have a classified ad on the USMMA site, just tell Lynn if it should be included in this compiled list.

This event may have been our best event in 2019 for promoting and spreading the word about the Mangalarga Marchador horse!     Because New England is a small area, we spoke to people from several states (CT, RI, NY, MA, NH, VT, ME) and Canada.

Together with the January Horse Illustrated issue, we seem poised for a great year in 2020!   Marchador ON!

    Best regards,

  • Equine Journal News!

We have exciting news!   The USMMA has become an affiliate with the Equine Journal magazine for one year.  www.equinejournal.com   It is published on-line and in-print and thus offers us a great way to increase exposure to the Mangalarga Marchador breed.     We will be looking for other opportunities and would welcome member suggestions.
This new affiliation offers the following benefits to our members:

    • Complimentary Equine Journal delivered to US members (postage is too much for mailing outside of the US)   ONE COPY PER HOUSEHOLD.
    • Unlimited 10% discount for any advertising in the Journal

And for the USMMA and the Mangalarga Marchador breed exposure:

    • Website link to the USMMA
    • 1/2 page of news in every issue of the Journal
    • Advertising value equivalent to the affiliation fee.
    • Event exposure in monthly calendar listings

IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO RECEIVE A PRINTED COPY OF THE JOURNAL, please respond to this email to OPT OUT.

    Best regards,

  • Virtual Dressage Competition for Gaited Horses!

Two October Virtual Competition Dressage Tests – by Teresa Bippen, FOSH

FOSH (Friends of Sound Horses) has partnered with NAWD (North American Western Dressage) to bring you a special offer  and opportunity.   (You must become a member of FOSH)

    • Use one test to “get ready” by submitting a virtual dressage test ANYTIME or during any NAWD virtual show that offers dressage
    • Use the other test to show in our Gaits Wide Open National Virtual Dressage Show for Gaited Horses Oct 1-31, 2019.
    • You may also ride two different tests in the FOSH Virtual Show during October 1-31 and submit both tests to receive two scores
    • FOSH pays the office fee as part of the coupon!
    • Sign up at www.nawdhorse.org
    • Choose your own test – IJA, NAWD, WDAA, or NWHA.  Both IJA and NAWD tests are available to be ridden western or “traditionally.”

FOSH is sponsoring a coupon to the first 50 registrants to receive feedback on their dressage work with their gaited horse through a virtual dressage test.  Use coupon code GWO2019 to take advantage of two free dressage tests for your gaited horse sponsored by FOSH.  Your rides will be judged by a licensed FOSH IJA judge who is also licensed as a dressage judge.

FOSH is happy to offer a longer 30 day window for the 2019 tests as weather changes can be so dramatic across the U.S. and impact your riding conditions, plus there is more opportunity to ride two different tests.

For more information about the GAITS WIDE OPEN NATIONAL VIRTUAL DRESSAGE SHOW visit this page: www.northamericanwesterndressage.com/ride/gaits/

TIPS FOR RECORDING YOUR VIRTUAL DRESSAGE TEST!

    1. Host a “Virtual Dressage Test Play Day” –   Set up a dressage arena and have a “play day” to record each others’ tests!  Hints for successfully recording a dressage test are available on the NAWD website.
    2. Your dressage arena doesn’t need to be fancy but assure your dimensions are correct!
    3. Video tape from C. Make sure you don’t obscure the judges’ review of the entire horse (remember to be far enough back at C that when the horse comes by C, the judge is able to visualize the entire horse.    Remember to keep the camera in focus!!!

Dressage is for EVERY horse – including gaited horses.  Yes, we have heard all of the arguments about how gaited horses can’t bend and that they need to keep their heads high to gait.  We’ve heard from mainstream dressage judges who feel gaited horses can’t possibly manage dressage because “the gait is not pure”.  Our judges believe that gaited horses absolutely CAN bend and that their gaits ARE pure, although an alternative to trot.

FOSH and the USMMA would love to see some Marchadors enter this competition!
