Destiny do Summerwind and Gayle Hamilton, TX
I grew up with horses, but then when I turned 30, I joined the Foreign Service and started living overseas, so I could no longer own horses. Luckily, in most of the countries where I lived, I could find horses to find, but it just wasn’t he same.
When I knew that I would be retiring from the State Dept, I started doing research. I had grown up with Quarter Horses and Arabs, but due to back problems, I wanted a gaited horse and I wanted one that was unique. I stumbled onto the Marchador and found Lynn and John Kelley. They were awesome! They answered my questions, provided photos and invited me to come visit anytime. They were so proud of the breed and so welcoming to someone exploring the breed that I thought that if they were representational of owners, then count me in! I have found over time that everyone I have encountered with the Marchador has been very friendly and proud of their breed.
Chanel de Miami with days old Destiny
I was still overseas, so decided to do the Future Foal. Lynn provided me photos and info and I chose a mare. Well, I got a colt, but really wanted a filly. Another buyer got a filly, but wanted a colt, so we swapped! I retired, bought some land and got ready and when Destiny was 8 months old, had her brought to Texas. Unfortunately, because she is so pretty and was the baby here, everyone has spoiled her. She is a “brat”, but I love her and as she gets older she is getting much better.
Destiny having fun as a youngster in TX
She is 3 years old now and I have been doing ground work with her. She lunges with or without a saddle, has jumped a small obstacle and walked over a tarp. She is smart, pretty (I love her elfin ears), and is a joy. I can’t wait until I am able to ride her, which I hope will be later this year. I am heading back to Africa to work for six months so will wait until I return.
She is my Destiny.
She is stretching to make 14.3H so hopefully the extra few months will allow her to get a little more growth. I can’t thank Lynn and John enough for Destiny. Sadly, her dam (Chanel de Miami) and baby sister were lost in 2011, so that makes her even more special to me.

Flying Oaks' New Sign tells everyone more about the MM breed
Flying Oaks Ranch, OK — In February, Flying Oaks hired ranch manager Matt Brendal. Matt’s horse background is in Natural horsemanship and horseshoeing. He is also a competitive participant in American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA) events. Matt says this about the Marchadors: “I had never heard of Marchador horse before my contact with Rick. From my limited experience these horses seem very intelligent, sensitive and gentle. They are wonderful horses to work with and I look to forward to this opportunity to learn more about them.”
Rancho de los Cielos, CA — An article about the Marchador breed was written and published in Italy! by Alessandra Deerinck, a new USMMA member purchasing a “de los Cielos” foal (Rio de los Cielos x 1681 Marengo da Tosana). The article shows how Alessandra applied her methods to some of our horses. Video from those sessions will hopefully soon be available on You-Tube. Read more about Alessandra on her website, www.human2horse.com We hope to translate the article and publish it soon.
Alessandra wrote about how easy it is to train and work with Marchadors, how intelligent they are, and how easy it is to form a bond with them based on her experiences working with our Marchadors.
Alessandra Deerink is a veterinarian trained in Italy whose experiences with horses include 12 years as a jockey racing Thoroughbreds, and greater than a decade in the U.S. re-fitting Thoroughbreds for life outside the race course, endurance riding, and promulgating the training discipline that has become her life work: Liberty riding and training.
The essence of Alessandra’s, and her mentor, Carolyn Reznick’s, training is the bond between rider and horse, based on the language of gesture and behavior that horses use among themselves. Alessandra and Carolyn believe one must develop companionship to have a true two-way conversation. Both begin developing a relationship when a horse is unconfined, when the horse can say “no” and go away.
Alessandra ascribes to theory and methodology originally described by Carolyn Resnick, author of Naked Liberty, and of a series of training videos, beginning with “Introduction to the Waterhole Rituals” that established her methods of creating a bond with horses based on her studies of wild horse behavior. For over 25 years, Carolyn was a noted clinician, trainer, and Arabian horse breeder from her Sonoma California ranch, Stonehenge Arabians. She still provides clinics and individual teaching in her methods from her present ranch in Escondido, California, and she has played with a Marchador she calls Marchador, since 2007, a white gelding imported by Susann Gabriel. Koyote Libertas – from the photo shoot
SW Future Foal @ Summerwind, AZ — Laurie and Don Klassen from SK, Canada came down for a visit. Laurie owns Beethoven do Summerwind. Laurie picked up her 2011 SW Awards prize money and had a great time with Koyote Libertas, before she and Don drove on to Sedona!
The following weekend was a MM photo shoot with fun photographers Tamara Gooch and Jess Lee and St. Patrick’s Day was our first ever ACTHA ride. It’s hard to believe that next month we’ll be heading off for Colorado!
Lori SilcherThe American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA)
Hi, this video is my horse Bali, (4 Seasons Marchador stallion) and I in the competition for America’s Favorite Trail Horse competition. I hope you will watch it from start to finish and enjoy it so we get your vote! We put our heart into it, had a GREAT time doing it. The rules said, less than 5 minutes, tough to show all he can do, but here is a sample of this, young, kind hearted stallion doing his best, as always for me.http://www.facebook.com/ACTHA Look in the left hand column and click on “Peoples Choice audition”, then scroll down, go to page two and find us. The only way your vote will be counted is if you click on the “vote” box, the like button will not count. Thanks!!!!! I think this is a GREAT way to get our Marchadores seen!

Caboclo da Pidade and Lynn Kelley holding the Lucas Guerra Complete Horse Award
I was puzzled when a package arrived at my front door that was not expected. Inside was a wonderful surprize – the first Lucas Guerra plaque awarded to the winner of the USMMA’s complete horse competition! I had won with my Marchador, Caboclo da Piedade.
2011 was the first year for us to adopt this Brasilian tradition sometimes also called “PROVAS FUNCIONAL, functional test). The USMMA runs it as a VIDEO submittal competition. You film yourself and your horse running the course and a panel of 3 judges evaluates the video for penalties and time.
I found the gate to be the hardest obstacle for me. John built our gate and a friend made our poles!
The Complete Horse Competition is designed for easy set-up in your own back yard. That’s what me and Caboclo did.
This is an on-going competition so be sure to try it out with your Marchadors in 2012! Connie Claire is planning to add a Complete Horse course and test to the 2012 MM clinic in FL so we know there will be more entries in 2012! Any Marchador with any rider is eligible to enter and you can enter as often as you want as you improve!
The 2012 Mangalarga Marchador clinic will be held at the Florida Horse Park in Ocala FL.
We are providing lunch, dinners and a cocktail party for an all-inclusive price.

All of the North American Mangalarga Marchadors AND their ancestors have been added to our new pedigree system. It was a big effort to transfer our data manually.
938 Mangalarga Marchador horses are in our database. (206 are registered with the USMMA, but that number includes some horses that are now deceased). All of the North American horses have photos and overall, 37% have photos. Like Ancestry.com, you can go explore your horse’s lineage. You can find them in the Registry section of this website on the page labeled View Pedigree.
Information about the horses was added if it was available, like date of birth, color, registration number etc. However, if you look at the record, there is lots more room to add information about your horse – shows, awards, disciplines, height, weight, any kind of write-up. If you find errors, want to change the photo or want to add more information or video to your horse’s record, please send that request to the USMMA registrar.
You are able to download and print your horse’s pedigree whenever you want. On the pedigree form, you will notice a scannable code (using any smart phone) that will take you directly to the website and that pedigree on the website.
The USMMA registrar, now Megan McClarney Fallwell, will continue to issue the official registration document and the foal registration procedures remain the same.
Future Plans:
Classified ads will facilitate MM sales or stallion stud services. Photo shows Flying Oaks 2 year old colts.
Around April 2012, I will be adding and testing the WikiHorseWorld Classified Ads system if they have it completed on time.
WikiHorseWorld currently offers four ad “categories” for Horses, Products, Services, and Events. They will be developing four additional ad categories for Equine Real Estate, Trailers, Saddles, and Horse Hay (a total of 8 Classified Ad categories).
There will be options for simple ads and premium ads. Premium ads would include photos and videos.
During this timeframe is when WikiHorseWorld anticipates that members will be able to add photos, videos from your computer, and videos from YouTube to your Marchador’s pedigree. The classified ads and the horse’s pedigree, pictures and videos will be displayed on the USMMA website and also WikiHorseWorld’s website.
We met the precious cargo at Scottsdale Equine Reproductive Center!
In 2011, we were unbelievably excited to receive the first shipment of frozen semen exported from Brasil. Ho-hum, you say. It happens all the time. NOT! We had worked for over four years to see this happen. There were two main issues.
In Brasil, each breed is regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture. For this to work, the ABCCMM had to modify its registration regulations, which had previously not allowed the use of frozen semen. Then the Ministry of Agriculture had to create the rules for exportation for the MM and approve veterinarian clinics for collection and exportation. To our knowledge, there are only 2 clinics in Brasil that have been approved so far.
Ximoio de Maripa semen arrived in 2011 from Agro Maripa! He is pure blood Abaiba of very old genetics.
The second is that there is not much demand for frozen semen in Brasil. With so many horses and land, often the preferred method of breeding is still live cover. For us to get Brasilian Marchador semen, the breeder needed to want to do this for us – for the good of the Marchador breed around the world.
Enter Mr. Marcelo Baptista, owner of Agro Maripa who fulfilled our dream. Agro Maripa collected and shipped 3 Maripa stallions of excellent quality and impeccable lineage to us in March 2011.
Talisma Kafe, from Haras Elfar, is a stallion whose semen has been collected and we are working through the importation process for 2012
Frozen semen (and later frozen embryos) is very important for the future of the Marchador breed here in the U.S. Imported frozen semen adds many things:
Diversity – new bloodlines, new individuals to the North American gene pool.
Quality – these stallions are first-rate individuals, champions in their own right and proven producers. Often not for sale, frozen semen offers a way to bring their blood here.
Excitement – it is exciting to be able to have a larger catalogue of beautiful Marchador stallions to choose from.
Today, there are 13 USMMA registered breeding stallions in North America. We froze La Paz Jivago (100 breeding doses) before gelding him for owner Rox Rogers.
For us the diversity and quality were the key items. The excitement is just an added bonus! We could have an immediate boost in quality in one generation. For diversity, one could argue that we are okay there for now. Because we are fortunate to have many breeding stallions here in the U.S., enough to breed the mares and cross-breed the resulting next generation. But what about the third, fourth and fifth generation?
We may not be alive to see those MM foals born, but we are doing this for them. Continued importation is the key for maintaining and improving the quality of the Mangalarga Marchador breed here. We plan to import more semen, from different bloodlines and make it available – a semen bank – either through the SW Future Foal franchise or the M Foundation.
Connie Claire with La Paz Jivago foal DaVinci do Summerwind. DaVinci was the first MM foal born using frozen semen in the U.S. We are expecting a 2012 foal from Oma de Maripa using his frozen semen!
We would encourage MM breeders to freeze their stallion’s’ semen here if it’s viable (before they are gelded or get too old). Perhaps your great grandchildren would like to have a foal from him someday!
Frozen semen lasts forever. It is a great investment in the future of the Mangalarga Marchador breed!
Great job to all members for getting out there with their Marchadors! Who else wants to report in?

Sandy on Amora (Aliane Fazenda Zouga) & Bill on Andante (Apple Pie de Miami)
Sandy and I participated in the 2011 National Cavalry Competition and Bivouac in September. It was held at historic Fort Reno, just west of Oklahoma City, OK. Until its closure as an active Army post, it was one of three Remount Centers that provided many thousands of horses and mules to the Cavalry, Artillery, and Quartermaster branches. During WWII it was also a large Prisoner of War camp.
We enjoyed some success at this year’s Competition. Sandy placed 2nd of 18 in Level 3 (Novice) Military Horsemanship. Bill placed 3rd of 16 in Level 2 Military Horsemanship (Intermediate). We also participated in other events, including Mounted Pistol and Mounted Saber, with less success but lots of fun. On Saturday we held a formal parade and ceremony. We mustered 70+ mounted soldiers and also had two artillery pieces from Ft. Sill, OK (about 120 south of Ft. Reno). We were very pleased that Andante and Amora stood quietly even for the firing of the 75mm gun!
Next year’s event will be at Ft. Riley, KS (about 100 miles west of Kansas City, MO).
