My name is Alessandra Deerinck, I own and operate HH Sensing, a horse training and horsemanship instruction operation out of San Marcos, California.

    Riding Rio de los Cielos
    Riding Rio de los Cielos

In 2010 I experienced what it is to ride a Mangalarga Marchador, and it has added to my professional life. Since then I have worked on bringing this breed of horses to attention anywhere I work and compete. Being accepted on the 2016 BOD of the USMMA is an honor, and I will do my best to cover the role of Secretary and to bring to life the MGM Ambassador Program.
I was not “born with horses”, in Milano, Italy. I “pulled” them in my life because I always felt drawn to them like a magnet is drawn to metal. I wanted to ride, since I was two, but my Dad asked me to wait until I was eleven. A few years later he also asked me to stop because he was concerned about the dangers of riding, but I could not obey him. Riding is my passion, and has become my job. At the age of sixteen, in order to keep riding I went to work at the racetrack, exercising horses before I went to school every morning. I also earned my license and rode and won in flat races. I value the time I spent at the racetrack as well as I am thankful to my parents for insisting I graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Milano. During that time I followed the work of Dr. Bassignana, a racetrack Veterinarian and Professor at the school of Veterinary Medicine in Pisa, worked at different farms to assist in the foaling season and did student internships in small and large animal surgery. For the same doctor I illustrated with drawings and edited his book about lameness in horses.

I competed in flat races between 1980 and 1992, until an accident ended my racing career. In 1992 I also met Charles Deerinck, and we got married two years later. In 2005 I attempted to get a racehorse trainer license in the US, and started to exercise racehorses, but I had another major fall in which I broke my back for the third time. Too often jockeys risk their lives riding, because not much care is taken about the racehorse’s proper schooling. Since then, changing this very wrong conception became important to me, and I am very aware of how fortunate I am, being able to ride again and not having permanent consequences from my accidents. Of the many racehorses that left their influence in me, one is very special. His name was Maslogarth, an ordinary racehorse that, just for being a “good boy”, became the S Siro racetrack mascot, and earned himself lifetime room and board from this institution. Together we won and placed in several races, I was able to ride him bareback with a halter on the racetrack. On the ground, he walked at my side free of tack, even when we were between all the other horses. At that time I could not explain how I was able to work with him like that. It was spontaneous, and beautiful. Later in my life, when I met Carolyn Resnick, I understood a lot more of what I had experienced. Working with her inspired me to create HH Sensing, a new way relate to horses, based on liberty training, but rooted in the goals and nuances of classical dressage training, current horse behavioral sciences and my experience of forty years spent with horses. I have ridden in many different disciplines, trained many horses, and now, aside from being the mother of three children, I compete in any venue that is suitable for the horses I train. I believe in a comprehensive approach, and take care of any and every aspect of the horse, from managing their health and nurturing their mind, to trimming their hooves if barefoot, from training to competing if the owners would like to do so. The thrill of an endurance race is for me as exciting as teaching my horse to keep eyes and ears on me or to walk truly straight on a loose rein or to teach my skills to others.
Since the year 2009, first with Human to Horse, and now with HH Sensing, I have worked as a horsemanship clinician and horse trainer, between the US and Italy, my country of origin. I coded HH Sensing to be able to teach it online, and in traditional settings, like the clinics I have held annually for the last five years in Italy. I am a regular contributor in the training section for two different magazines, Il Mio Cavallo in Italy, and Elite Equestrian in Ocala Florida. In 2010 I translated, and got published in Italian, the book Naked Liberty, by Carolyn Resnick. Currently I am working on publishing it for her in an e-book form. During the same year I was invited to present at Cavalli a Milano, a worldwide equestrian trade show held in Italy. The same year, I presented my work at Equine Affaire in Pomona.

2010 was also the year I first rode a Mangalarga Marchador. The reason this happened was because I was searching for a very smooth horse for a client, and in my quest I called Jacob and Theresa at Rancho de Los Cielos. My client bought a Mangalarga Marchador from another breeder, but they asked me to go back and work with their horses. Rio de los Cielos was the first horse I worked with at Rancho de Los Cielos. I will always remember the very first moment, the two of us in the arena, no restraints of any kind. We were both standing still. His big eyes were asking me to start moving. I was hesitating because I did not know him at all. As soon as I stepped out, he moved with me like my shadow, even following me when I leaped in the air. When I went from working on the ground to riding Rio, I realized the reason why we all fall in love with Mangalarga Marchadors. Rio was very light, attentive, relaxed; he moved effortlessly at each gait. He always seemed to be asking me what I wanted to do. More than anything else, he was easy. I felt like I was with a friend.
The same year I recommended another student of mine in Italy to buy a Mangalarga Marchador, and after exploring together the horses available in Europe, he bought a mare from Max de Vroet in France. I also connected with the AIAMM (the Italian association of MM breeders) and with Domingos Lollobrigida in Brazil, while I was studying about the breed to better my ability to train and portray it in my articles. I have published numerous articles about Mangalarga Marchadores, in Italian and English magazines, and still cannot feel I exhausted what I have to say about them, because my daily experience continuously adds subjects, and improves my knowledge.

Riding Allegria de Los Cielos in the Swallow Day Parade in San Juan Capistrano, with the attire we will use for the Rose Parade 2016

I have worked with most of Rancho de Los Cielos horses using my HH Sensing approach, and have ridden almost all of them, but Allegria de los Cielos is my favorite. I introduced her to endurance in 2012 and now I have her in training; together we are bound to go to the Tournament of Roses Parade for 2016, because we competed in endurance and we are part of the AERC Parade Riders.
In the past ten months, with Allegria, I won the title of Champion mare 2014 in Las Vegas, participated in rail shows, trail competitions, cowboy challenges, endurance LD rides and I am training for another endurance ride in October.
I own two mares, a TB 14 y/o named Downtown Rosalie, that has been with me since 2006, and Aria de Los Cielos, my own Mangalarga Marchador out of Rio de Los Cielos and 1681 Marengo de Tosana. Aria was born in 2012 and is ready to start her training in the fall. I put a lot of care in the upbringing of this horse, to set up the conditions for having a great relationship and look forward to the near future.

  • Member Update – Articles about the Marchador and more

From Alessandra Deerinck, Human to Horse, USMMA member:

Along with my warmest wishes for the Holidays, I would like to add to the list of accomplishments of the USMMA a few more instances in which I have brought the Mangalarga Marchador breed to the public’s attention  through my business, Human to Horse.

The Marchador horses I worked with, mainly from Rancho de Los Cielos, have taken part in endurance competition and will participate to dressage shows in the future. They also have been featured in articles that I wrote and had published in the US on Elite Equestrian , HorsemanNews (Dec 2014 issue)  and in Europe on Il Mio Cavallo. I have been doing this since 2012 and wanted to make the articles available to anyone that is interested. I can provide an english translation for the ones in Italian.  In 2012 one of my articles was republished in Brazil, translated in Portuguese, on the ABCCMM official magazine.

In February 2015,  I will present the Mangalarga Marchador horses that I have been training in the 2nd edition of The Day of the Horse, in Valley Center CA.

H2H is interested in working with any other breeder that would like to have their horses trained by H2H. We are located in San Marcos, California

Here are some of the articles from 2014 from Italy, where I worked MM horses. I can provide translations for any article I write in Italian.

    IMC 1:2014 Ispezione di razza

IMC 11:2013 Fieno asciutto o in brodo ridotto

I do not have the pdfs of the ones on Elite Equestrian, but you can check out the magazine online (www.eliteequestrian.us), in the past year I had one article in every issue and most of them have MM in the illustrations.

  • May Inspection Visit – ABCCMM

    May 24-June 2nd

This letter was sent out by Laurie Klassen, USMMA Secretary

    To Marchador Breeders and Owners:

The USMMA does not require inspection of Marchadors for registration.

However, we believe the ABCCMM inspection process is a valuable tool in evaluating and preserving the quality of the Marchador breed, especially for breeding animals.   A number of breeders and owners carry both the USMMA registration and the ABCCMM registration on their horses.   The ABCCMM registration process is more complex than ours, requiring the following steps:

    • Report of Breeding by the mare owner and confirmed by the stallion owner
    • Report of Birth by the mare owner
    • Name of the foal by the mare owner
    • DNA
    • Physical inspection of the foal by an ABCCMM technician  (provisional registration)
    • At age 3 or later, physical inspection of the adult Marchador for conformation, temperament and gait. (definitive registration)

If the paperwork is up-to-date, the process is straight forward.  If the paperwork is lacking, the ABCCMM process is quite onerous and costly with late fees.

The USMMA has worked with the ABCCMM to obtain a lower annual membership fee for Marchador owners.  (Marchador breeders would still pay the higher fee of $540R per year. )   Once a member, the ABCCMM on-line Registration System provides the vehicle to submit all communications to them for report of breeding, birth etc.   The ABCCMM will provide an inspector to visit the US twice a year, and the ABCCMM will pay for the transportation to the US.

Our first inspection in 2014 will be planned for May if enough horses and owners say they are ready for inspection.  The second inspection will be planned for late September/October 2014 following the annual Marchador Clinic.

Attached is a report of Marchadors we believe are eligible for ABCCMM inspection.  If there are more horses you want to bring to our attention, please let us know.    In some cases, the paperwork may not have been submitted to the ABCCMM and that paperwork would need to be completed or fixed before the inspection is scheduled.

You do not need to become an ABCCMM member, but the paperwork fees are doubled for non-members.  In some cases, the BREEDER may need to sponsor the inspection or sign off on paperwork, if the ABCCMM paperwork is still in their name.   Either before or after inspection, the registration paper can be transferred to the new owner.

The cost of the inspection is $500 per day for the inspector, plus ABCCMM membership and registration fees, plus the cost of airfare to get the inspector to your farm.   Housing, meals and transportation for the inspector should also be included in your planning.  Most people just have the inspector stay with them.     For some areas, like Florida, it would be possible to share the inspector for a day and split the fees.

We estimate an inspection could take an hour per horse and perhaps 15 minutes per foal.  If there is time remaining, you can use the inspector to help you with your riding, Marchador gait training or questions, recommendations for breeding and more.  You do not need to keep the inspector for a full-day either and perhaps the daily rate can be split with another participant.

The inspector will be Kate Barcelos, DVM, an accomplished rider, trainer, vet and ABCCMM inspector.

Please let Lynn Kelley (futurefoal@gmail.com) or Megan McClarney Fallwell (meganmcclarney@gmail.com) know of your interest in participating in the ABCCMM inspection.   We will then send out a follow-up, more detailed schedule and instructions to the Marchador owners that wish to participate.

  • The USMMA/ABCCMM Montana Clinic 2013

A thank you from Montana Clinic Coordinator Tresa Smith.

Obrigada Brazil, Canada, USA,  Montana and Volunteers for an exceptional clinic.

The Montana Clinic was held at the Rea Ranch near Helena Montana, September 5-10 of 2013.   It was the largest gathering of Mangalarga Marchador horses ever in the U.S.  with 24 horses participating .   Altogether 40 Marchador enthusiasts turned out to ride, to learn, to help.

The ABCCMM Brazil sent its finest riders and judges to the Montana Clinic. Kate Barcelos shared her wonderful knowledge and riding talents by giving major demonstrations and lectures on the Marchadors gaits, and with her private lessons elevated students to a new level of riding conscience.  The ABCCMM flew their Director of Judges to the clinic to oversee the competition.  Tiago Resende Garcia worked with Montana’s Lori Silcher on the Sela de Ouro to produce its Long Distance Ride and Functional Horse Competition. Tiago, with his judgments and sense of humor, made understanding the Marchador fun as well as informative.

The USMMA financially subsidized the clinic and made it financially feasible.

USMMA members came from Canada with flag and four riders, Laurie and Don Klassen, Dana Johnson and Karen Holman.  These neighbors from the North pitched in and helped in every way possible to make the clinic work.

USMMA members came from the South ,  From  Florida,: Brooke and Faye Little: from South Carolina Aline Greene, from Texas: Cathy Pierce and from Southern  California., USMMA President Susan Gabriel. And Liz Tankersley came from Washington, D.C..  Great riders , great participants, now good friends.

USMMA members from   Montana  were the host committee. Montana provided Mangalarga Marchador Mounts  for the Clinic.  Even a non biased account would have to comment on the exceptional quality of the horses. Moreover, the Montana Committee: Lori Silcher, who coordinated the Sela de Ouro with Tiago,  Eliza Frazer, Chris Nielson,  Rox Rogers, Derek Brown, Dr. Tia Nelson,  and Kindle McCauley  worked really, really hard to make the clinic happen and succeed. As one person aptly noted, “Everyone had their oar in the water.”     I might note that there was an informal Montana committee as well of attendees who found themselves not just participating but helping :  Ann Damrow, Jodi, Cody Hill and  Lori Connor..

Official Volunteers made the clinic run smoothly.  Tom Sliter of Washington .D.C. and Kenton Rowe of Helena , Montana, came with their cameras to record the clinic for history and its participants. Lane and Linda Coulston, helped with horses, stalls  sound systems and meals,. John Connor did yeomen work of stall cleaning. Peter Silcher and Ross Damrow helped Derek Brown with the arena arrangements.  We also had a wonderful visitor/volunteer from Brazil, Ana Boareto who helped in every way.

  • WikiHorseWorld Pedigree Update

Abaiba Remo – is your Marchador a grandchild?

All of the North American Mangalarga Marchadors AND their ancestors have been added to our new pedigree system.  It was a big effort to transfer our data manually.

938 Mangalarga Marchador horses are in our database. (206 are registered with the USMMA, but that number includes some horses that are now deceased).  All of the North American horses have photos and overall, 37% have photos.  Like Ancestry.com, you can go explore your horse’s lineage.  You can find them in the Registry section of this website on the page labeled View Pedigree.

Information about the horses was added if it was available, like date of birth, color, registration number etc.  However, if you look at the record, there is lots more room to add information about your horse – shows, awards, disciplines, height, weight, any kind of write-up.  If you find errors, want to change the photo or want to add more information or video to your horse’s record, please send that request to the USMMA registrar.

You are able to download and print your horse’s pedigree whenever you want.  On the pedigree form, you will notice a scannable code (using any smart phone) that will take you directly to the website and that pedigree on the website.

The USMMA registrar, now Megan McClarney Fallwell,  will continue to issue the official registration document and the foal registration procedures remain the same.

    Future Plans:

Classified ads will facilitate MM sales or stallion stud services. Photo shows Flying Oaks 2 year old colts.

Around April 2012, I will be adding and testing the WikiHorseWorld Classified Ads system if they have it completed on time.

WikiHorseWorld currently offers four ad “categories” for Horses, Products, Services, and Events. They will be developing four additional ad categories for Equine Real Estate, Trailers, Saddles, and Horse Hay (a total of 8 Classified Ad categories).

There will be options for simple ads and premium ads.  Premium ads would include photos and videos.

During this timeframe is when WikiHorseWorld anticipates that members will be able to add photos, videos from your computer, and videos from YouTube to your Marchador’s pedigree.  The classified ads and the horse’s pedigree, pictures and videos will be displayed on the USMMA website and also WikiHorseWorld’s website.
