  • 2nd ABCCMM Inspection Visit Planned

Dr. Getulio Vieira rides a young MM gelding for the ABCCMM inspection

Dr. Getulio Tadeau Vieira returns to the US in May to inspect U.S. born Marchador horses.  USMMA members who are also members of the ABCCMM wanted to have their horses maintain Brazilian registry as well.  The Brazilian association has strict guidelines and it inspects all horses for conformation, gait and temperment at age three before the horses are fully registered.  Lynn Kelley is coordinating the effort again and we plan to host our first clinic during the inspection visit as well.

For more information about the inspection process, please read the attached pdf which was an article published after the 2005 inspection.  2005 marked the 1st time an inspection was ever held outside of the Marchador’s native country, Brasil.

  • 1st USMMA Clinic Held

    First USMMA clinic, MT

WHAT MAKES A MARCHADOR A MARCHADOR?

The USMMA clinic was a smashing success in Montana last Memorial Day weekend despite inclement weather.  Dr. Getulio Vieira, an ABCCMM inspector for more than 20 years, taught the attendees and our 2 US vets in training about Mangalarga Marchador conformation and gait.  (Drs Tia Nelson and Hugh Rogers).    The comments compared the horses being shown to the STANDARD of the BREED.

The USMMA plans to produce some educational documents and videos from the clinic for all members and the general public.

  • The M Brand Trademark

    USMMA PRESS RELEASE

ABCCMM Protects their M Brand Trademark in the US

The ABCCMM Horseshoe M Brand on a Mangalarga Marchador horse

On December 25th, the US Patent and Trademark Office awarded the Horseshoe M Brand Trademark in the U.S. to the ABCCMM, the Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador Association. The trademark is an M inside of a horseshoe. The M Brand is placed on the shoulder of an inspected, approved Mangalarga Marchador horse. It is universally recognized as a symbol of quality and tradition for this Brazilian breed.

The Brazilian association, supported by members of the United States Mangalarga Marchador Association, filed for the trademark in 2004.   The trademark attorney for the ABCCMM was funded by USMMA members Tresa Vivian Smith, John J. Kelley and Linda Sheridan Kelley.  Previously there were rumors and reports circulated on websites and in magazines that certain individuals claimed ownership of the M brand and exclusivity of the Marchador  breed in the US.

The ABCCMM is the rightful owner of the trademark and the inspection process and now holds the US trademark to maintain the quality of the breed here as well. (Registration number 3358324).

“It is a wonderful day for the future of the Mangalarga Marchador in the US”, said Tresa Smith, President of the USMMA.  “We can be confident that the quality and value of the inspection process and the meaning of the M brand is preserved.”

The USMMA sponsored a Brazilian inspection process in 2005 where horses born in the US were inspected and branded. They plan to host another inspection in 2008.

  • Tresa Smith assumes Presidency

Tresa riding Tabatinga Monitor in MT

Effective August 1st, Lynn Kelley, a founding member and President of the USMMA stepped down as President and Vice President, Tresa Smith, also a founding member of the association, assumed the role of President.

Tresa is an owner, breeder and importer of Mangalarga Marchadors in Montana. She discovered the breed while working in Brazil during the 1990s and decided to import horses to the US. She chose the Tabatinga bloodline as her speciality because of their hardiness and cow sense to work her ranch and Angus cows in Montana.

Lynn Kelley will stay on the board in the role of Registrar. The USMMA has registered more than 90% of the Marchadors born in the US. Horses registered in Brazil and imported to the US are automatically registered with the USMMA, with the submission of DNA.

The USMMA remains focused on introducing the Marchador across the country in the coming years. In 2007, Marchadors were registered in the new states of North Carolina and South Carolina and a new country, Canada. For further expansion and improved genetic diversity, the Kelleys are working with the ABCCMM (the Brazilian association with over 200,000 registered horses) to import frozen semen and frozen embryos to the U.S.

  • USMMA trains 2 vets in Brazil

    USMMA PRESS RELEASE

US Vets training in Brazil as breed inspectors

The ABCCMM, the Brazilian Mangalarga Marchador Association accepted two US vets into their training program to become certified inspectors of the breed.  The Mangalarga Marchador registration process in Brazil requires that every horse be inspected at age three for gait, conformation and temperament in order to be fully registered and entered into the breeding registry.

The USMMA is dedicated to maintain the quality and hardiness of the breed in the US as well and this is a historic first step.  Dr. Tia Nelson and Dr. Hugh Rogers are the first non-Brazilian veterinarians to attend the inspection and technical school.  In addition, Dr. Nelson is the first woman inspector.   Both may also serve as judges for the USMMA at shows.

The training involved classroom study and field work performing actual inspections at MM breeding farms under the guidance of a trained technician and vet, Dr. Getulio Tadeu Vieira.   While in Brazil, the vets also went to horse expositions and other training facilities to learn the versatility of the breed.  The US vets will continue training with the Brazilian inspector during his visit to the US this summer.
