  • A Tribute to Howard Bonis (1944-2017)

    By Lynn Kelley

Howard Bonis, the first Marchador owner in Maine recently passed away late January, 2017   When Howard could no longer take care of his beloved horse, a great home was found with Cyndy Falvey, only a few minutes away on the Maine coastline.   Cyndy is a long-time horse owner and has another older Thoroughbred on her property.  Cyndy also took Chama’s companion, the goat (named Goaty)!    The two animals are inseparable and when Cyndy trail rides, often the goat comes along!   As a tribute to Howard, Cyndy has given a generous donation to the USMMA in Howard’s memory.     Thank you Cyndy!

You can read some of Howard’s obituary here and gain a sense of what kind of person he was!  I met Howard when he contacted me to purchase a Summerwind Future Foal.  Already in his late 60’s, he guaranteed me that he would be a great home with no problems training horses from a young age.   He proceeded to tell me many, if not all, of the stories about the horses in his life, including a Morgan stallion that he loved for many years.   He had acreage in Maine so he set out to build a horse barn and hay storage on the property.   He put a paddock up on the crest of a hill with plenty of trees for shade and shelter.   All for his future horse.

Howard was convinced that his Marchador would be enjoyed by the whole family including his grandchildren.   He also wanted to use the horse as a therapy horse with autistic children.  Before his foal was born, an older, trained Marchador became available that I thought might be a good fit for Howard and perhaps better than waiting for a foal to grow up.    Howard agreed.   Chama was off to Maine!   Chama was loved by the family.   He was well-cared for by Howard who got to relive all of the warmth and enjoyment about grooming, feeding, and riding again.  After Howard’s death, his family wrote and told me how much they  thought having Chama prolonged Howard’s life.

I drove to meet Howard and his wife Susan after a Kelley family wedding in New Hampshire.   It was a memory I will always treasure.  Little did I know then, that it would be soon after, he would need to give up his Marchador.   After Chama moved on to Cyndy, we were fortunate enough to meet her.   Cyndy often comes out west in the winters so we met during Barrett-Jackson week.   A horse couldn’t be more lucky to have these two owners in Maine!

    Obituary  Howard L. Bonis Jr.,

Howard L. Bonis Jr., 72, of Arrowsic, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2017. Howard died peacefully with his wife by his side and surrounded by his children.

Howard was born on March 5, 1944, in Norwalk, Conn., to Howard L. Bonis Sr. and Mary Castango Bonis. He grew up in Norwalk, Conn. He was a member of the first graduating class of Brien McMahon High School in 1962. After high school, Howard attended Norwalk Community College, before enlisting  in the United States Marine Corps.

His bravery during the Vietnam War earned him a Purple Heart and Bronze Star With Valor. While in Vietnam, he served as a fire team leader with the Company F, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines. He was medically retired from the United States Marine Corps.

Howard married Susan Walker Bonis on Sept. 9, 1967. Howard met Navy Corpsman Susan Walker at St. Albans Naval Hospital on Long Island, N.Y., while he was recovering from injuries sustained on the battlefield. He went on to graduate from American International College with a degree in political science, and later earned his master’s degree in special education from Salem State University.

The most rewarding years of his professional career were spent as an educator in both public and private schools.

A celebration of his life will take place in Maine in the summer of 2017. He will be privately interred at Arlington National Cemetery. We ask you to celebrate Howard by having a root beer float, eating an éclair, or dancing with someone you love.

Chama Lustre do Lucero – the well-traveled Marchador  First Marchador in Maine.

Chama  was born and bred at Haras Lucero, TN, the breeding farm of Bill and Sandy Kambic, long-time members of the USMMA.   He is the son of Desafio de Miami x Apple Pie de Miami, both bred by the Guerra family of Florida, the first importers of Marchador horses to the U.S.

At a young age, he was sold and shipped to California to Jake Martinez and Theresa Longo at Rancho de los Cielos.   They were relatively new breeders and wanted to have some Marchadors to sell as they started their breeding program.   Chama moved from there to Oregon, where he was trained and competed successfully in mounted archery at Cascade Mounted Archery with Holm and Susan Neumann.

Being a horse “anyone could ride”, Chama moved south again to AZ to Sandy Hull.  When Chama didn’t work for her, Sandy moved on to another Marchador and Chama left here bound for Maine!   His forever home with 2 wonderful owners – Howard Bonis and now Cyndy Falvey!

  • You can help in new gait genetics research!

    lauradvm
Laura Patterson Rosa, DVM, Brazil, is a graduate student pursuing her doctorate at UF while researching gait genetics.

The Brooks Equine Genetics Lab at the University of Florida has a new study that continues to research the genes, or combination of genes that might influence gait.   Previous studies have focused on other breeds, this study focuses on Brazilian gaited breeds, with the main focus on the Mangalarga Marchador.

Here is some background from their website:

Have you ever asked yourself why do some horses gait? Horses are, indeed, the only known species of mammals that has such a wide variation in locomotion patterns. The gait is influenced by several factors: conformation and neurobiology, and to some extent environmental factors – such as human intervention in the form of shoeing and training. Each of the physiological aspects is influenced by other numerous components. The conformation by the bone length and thickness, muscle fiber type and joint angles. Types of nerves, presence and amount of calcium and potassium transmitters and synapse receivers control the neurobiology.

Several genes affect each of these components is therefore unlikely that a single gene is responsible for gaiting, but a combination of specific genes and their alleles. And in order to discover which genes are responsible for gait in horses, we need gaited horses! The goal of this study is to identify which genes predispose horses to gait, when compared to trotting or pacing horses. Our focus is mainly on the Mangalarga Marchador, but any Brazilian gaited breed is welcome.  And we need hundreds and hundreds of horses; the more horses that participate, the more successful our study will be.

You can help by submitting information and DNA from your Marchador!

For more information on the Brazilian Breeds gaited study, please follow this link to download the gait study forms needed to submit DNA on your Mangalarga Marchador!

  • My first Marchador filly is born!

    By Ronald Knaack

The morning of April 15th, 2016, I received the call and started driving!

12998585_10206762402598709_3458808691591585426_nMy first Marchador foal was waiting for me.   I had leased a Marchador mare, Whispering Pines Lareina, from Connie DeCamp of Westcliffe, CO and bred her using imported frozen semen to Talisma Kafe.    I am a lover of pinto coloring, so of course, my hope was for a pinto baby.   But, first and foremost was that the foal be born healthy.

My wish for healthy was granted and my wish for color was granted, but a palomino filly and not a pinto.  Cute, friendly and confident, we nicknamed her Buttercup.

This is Talisma Kafe’s first filly born in North America and I am a happy man and a new Marchador breeder.   I own 2 other Marchador mares and am looking forward to seeing more foals in 2017!   I am living the dream.

My website is  http://www.coloradomarchador.com/ and I am on Facebook too  https://www.facebook.com/RattlesnakeRon?fref=ts!   Stop by for more pictures.

Here are more photos of Buttercup and Lareina – first time out in the snow!

  • WikiHorseWorld Pedigree Update

Abaiba Remo – is your Marchador a grandchild?

All of the North American Mangalarga Marchadors AND their ancestors have been added to our new pedigree system.  It was a big effort to transfer our data manually.

938 Mangalarga Marchador horses are in our database. (206 are registered with the USMMA, but that number includes some horses that are now deceased).  All of the North American horses have photos and overall, 37% have photos.  Like Ancestry.com, you can go explore your horse’s lineage.  You can find them in the Registry section of this website on the page labeled View Pedigree.

Information about the horses was added if it was available, like date of birth, color, registration number etc.  However, if you look at the record, there is lots more room to add information about your horse – shows, awards, disciplines, height, weight, any kind of write-up.  If you find errors, want to change the photo or want to add more information or video to your horse’s record, please send that request to the USMMA registrar.

You are able to download and print your horse’s pedigree whenever you want.  On the pedigree form, you will notice a scannable code (using any smart phone) that will take you directly to the website and that pedigree on the website.

The USMMA registrar, now Megan McClarney Fallwell,  will continue to issue the official registration document and the foal registration procedures remain the same.

    Future Plans:

Classified ads will facilitate MM sales or stallion stud services. Photo shows Flying Oaks 2 year old colts.

Around April 2012, I will be adding and testing the WikiHorseWorld Classified Ads system if they have it completed on time.

WikiHorseWorld currently offers four ad “categories” for Horses, Products, Services, and Events. They will be developing four additional ad categories for Equine Real Estate, Trailers, Saddles, and Horse Hay (a total of 8 Classified Ad categories).

There will be options for simple ads and premium ads.  Premium ads would include photos and videos.

During this timeframe is when WikiHorseWorld anticipates that members will be able to add photos, videos from your computer, and videos from YouTube to your Marchador’s pedigree.  The classified ads and the horse’s pedigree, pictures and videos will be displayed on the USMMA website and also WikiHorseWorld’s website.

  • Gaia do Summerwind

Gaia made history at 11:00 p.m.October 27, 2012, becoming the first MM foal born in the US using imported frozen semen from Brasil. A labor of love, our dream was realized when Agro Maripá collected and exported the first frozen MM semen from 3 of his stallions in Brasil. Our continued thanks to Agro Maripa!

Gaia is the product of Oma de Maripa and Brasilia do Summerwind. She was reserved by Dr. Adrienne C. Scheck of Scottsdale AZ and with SW Future Foal retaining breeding rights to her to ensure her genetics are carried forward in the U.S.

All of us are thrilled with her!!!!!

Her name Gaia was selected by Adrienne for a number of reasons. Gaia (“guy-a”) is the goddess or personification of Earth or Mother Earth (the Greek common noun for “land” is ge or ga) in pre-Olympian Greek mythology. The Gaia hypothesis proposes that organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a self-regulating, complex system that contributes to maintaining the conditions for life on the planet.

  • President’s Letter December 2012

    by John Kelley

Happy Holidays to all USMMA Members!

    2011 in Review!

It has been another busy year for the USMMA and the growth of the MM breed here in North America.

We held our first MM Gait Clinic in Texas. Many thanks to Megan and Colin Fallwell of Legacy Marchadors for sponsoring the event.  Connie Claire plans to build on this tradition with an April 2012 Clinic in Ocala Florida. See the post on that for details.

I hope everyone has had an opportunity to visit our new USMMA website,  which Colin Fallwell and Lynn Kelley created this year. Funding for this project was generously provided by Susan and Holm Neumann, Cascade Marchadors. Check out the section on the marcha gaits which includes video of Brazilian Marchadors correctly performing the unique Marcha Picada and Marcha Batida gaits.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/breed/the-marcha-gaits/

We created our fun, online horse competition, based on the Brazilian Functional Test.  We will continue this in 2012 and encourage everyone to try it doing the test with their horses!   Check out the details on our website.  Many thanks to Signa Strom and Theresa Longo for the ideas and development of this and to Ellen Farmer for translating.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/shows-and-events/complete-horse-test/

In July, five USMMA members traveled to Brazil to celebrate the 30th National Competition of the MM.  The ABCCMM MM generously invited US media to attend all or part of their 9 day tour to MM farms and the Show.   As a result of this media effort, the Marchador was on RFD-TV several times  – on RFD TV LIVE and also on THE HORSE SHOW with Rick Lamb.  We will be getting copies of the broadcasts for our use.  http://youtu.be/wfNjEjCuIxw

Our USMMA calendar is done for 2012, this time thanks to USMMA member Ellen Farmer.  With broader participation, this fund-raiser should top $1,000 in monies we can use in 2012 to further promote the breed.  The calendar also goes out to many friends, family, MM lovers and to Brazil helping us spread the word about the beauty and use of the Marchador Horse.

The new website has an on-line pedigree system of USMMA registered horses and Lynn is continuing to add videos and pictures for all horses and additional older pedigree information which goes back to our Brazilian historical roots.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/registry/view-pedigree/#

Our Board of Directors also changed this year. Signa Strom resigned from the Board.  We thank her for her many contributions and wish her the best in her future endeavors. Ellen Farmer, Lusonatica, has been appointed to the Board. The Board also appointed Derek Brown, Vista de Serra, to the Board and we look forward to both their contributions in the future.

The Board appointed Megan Fallwell, Legacy Marchadors to be the USMMA Registrar, effective January 1,2012. Lynn Kelley who was instrumental in creating our registry and working with the Brazilian Association to correct paperwork and establish a close working relationship, has worked closely with Megan over the last few months so that we will have a smooth transition. We have transitioned from the old HorseManager System to WikiHorseWorld, which will give the Registrar and the membership greater flexibility and access to Registry information in the future.   WikiHorseWorld plans to add a Classified Ads section which will be an added benefit.  Many thanks to my spouse for her contributions to the USMMA.

The Board also appointed Aline Oliveira Greene to be our Newsletter Editor.  I am very happy that we found someone to restart this valuable communication tool for the membership. Aline will also help administer the USMMA Facebook and Twitter accounts to encourage contact among the membership.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our April Clinic in Ocala Florida!

    John Kelley, USMMA President
