  • USMMA Registry Survey Project – 2016

Look up your horse (on a laptop or desktop computer!  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/registry/view-pedigree/
Goal: To correct and update the USMMA Horse Registration Database in 2016, including new photos. To encourage people not registering their Marchadors to join the USMMA and registry. If successful, to recommend that this project be repeated every 5 years. As a side benefit, people will also be asked to rejoin the USMMA as part of the survey process if they are not current members.

Project Volunteers: Tresa Smith, Lynn Kelley, Megan Fallwell Thanks to them for their help and support.

    Budget: $0

    What we did:
Emailed all members asking for updates on their horses.
Followed up with phone calls if no response.
    Input new information into Wikihorse.

    Results of the project:
New on-line form created for submitting registration information on a new foal. On the USMMA website. Completed form and photos emails directly to Registrar.
Corrected EVERY MM record for horses in the US and Canada.
    Added country of birth.
    Standardized the registration numbers.
Added the ABCCMM registration number and, if appropriate, the M Brand under markings.
Changed many horse colors to grey.
Changed some horses from stallions to geldings.
Updated owner information and began transfer process for over 10 horses.
    Updated death records.
Added 23 new foals born in 2015 and 2016 to the database. Will be registered as DNA is received.

Not under the scope of the project and new questions raised: Perhaps future projects
Did not update photos unless people submitted them. Many horses now adults still show foal photo.
Did not contact non-USMMA members. Should be done this year or as part of the USMMA membership drive.
Did not update transfer process – and it is clear that people do not understand it.

    Some Numbers and Information:

    • 293 Marchadors in the USMMA database today.
    • 265 Marchadors still alive in the USMMA database today.
    • Added 23 new MM foals born in 2015 and 2016 (not yet fully registered)
    • 37 Marchador owner transfers identified. In the process of collecting $$ if they want the registration. Some are non-members.
    • 63 Marchadors were born in Brazil.
    • 6 Marchadors born in Canada. 24 Marchador horses there in 3 provinces.

Breakdown of horses is below. 4 US states – AZ, CA,  MT  comprise more than 40% of the MMs in North America.  Canada breakdown is BC – 5% , AB, – 3%   SK – 1%.

  • WikiHorseWorld Pedigree Update

Abaiba Remo – is your Marchador a grandchild?

All of the North American Mangalarga Marchadors AND their ancestors have been added to our new pedigree system.  It was a big effort to transfer our data manually.

938 Mangalarga Marchador horses are in our database. (206 are registered with the USMMA, but that number includes some horses that are now deceased).  All of the North American horses have photos and overall, 37% have photos.  Like Ancestry.com, you can go explore your horse’s lineage.  You can find them in the Registry section of this website on the page labeled View Pedigree.

Information about the horses was added if it was available, like date of birth, color, registration number etc.  However, if you look at the record, there is lots more room to add information about your horse – shows, awards, disciplines, height, weight, any kind of write-up.  If you find errors, want to change the photo or want to add more information or video to your horse’s record, please send that request to the USMMA registrar.

You are able to download and print your horse’s pedigree whenever you want.  On the pedigree form, you will notice a scannable code (using any smart phone) that will take you directly to the website and that pedigree on the website.

The USMMA registrar, now Megan McClarney Fallwell,  will continue to issue the official registration document and the foal registration procedures remain the same.

    Future Plans:

Classified ads will facilitate MM sales or stallion stud services. Photo shows Flying Oaks 2 year old colts.

Around April 2012, I will be adding and testing the WikiHorseWorld Classified Ads system if they have it completed on time.

WikiHorseWorld currently offers four ad “categories” for Horses, Products, Services, and Events. They will be developing four additional ad categories for Equine Real Estate, Trailers, Saddles, and Horse Hay (a total of 8 Classified Ad categories).

There will be options for simple ads and premium ads.  Premium ads would include photos and videos.

During this timeframe is when WikiHorseWorld anticipates that members will be able to add photos, videos from your computer, and videos from YouTube to your Marchador’s pedigree.  The classified ads and the horse’s pedigree, pictures and videos will be displayed on the USMMA website and also WikiHorseWorld’s website.

Happy Holidays to all USMMA Members!

    2011 in Review!

It has been another busy year for the USMMA and the growth of the MM breed here in North America.

We held our first MM Gait Clinic in Texas. Many thanks to Megan and Colin Fallwell of Legacy Marchadors for sponsoring the event.  Connie Claire plans to build on this tradition with an April 2012 Clinic in Ocala Florida. See the post on that for details.

I hope everyone has had an opportunity to visit our new USMMA website,  which Colin Fallwell and Lynn Kelley created this year. Funding for this project was generously provided by Susan and Holm Neumann, Cascade Marchadors. Check out the section on the marcha gaits which includes video of Brazilian Marchadors correctly performing the unique Marcha Picada and Marcha Batida gaits.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/breed/the-marcha-gaits/

We created our fun, online horse competition, based on the Brazilian Functional Test.  We will continue this in 2012 and encourage everyone to try it doing the test with their horses!   Check out the details on our website.  Many thanks to Signa Strom and Theresa Longo for the ideas and development of this and to Ellen Farmer for translating.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/shows-and-events/complete-horse-test/

In July, five USMMA members traveled to Brazil to celebrate the 30th National Competition of the MM.  The ABCCMM MM generously invited US media to attend all or part of their 9 day tour to MM farms and the Show.   As a result of this media effort, the Marchador was on RFD-TV several times  – on RFD TV LIVE and also on THE HORSE SHOW with Rick Lamb.  We will be getting copies of the broadcasts for our use.  http://youtu.be/wfNjEjCuIxw

Our USMMA calendar is done for 2012, this time thanks to USMMA member Ellen Farmer.  With broader participation, this fund-raiser should top $1,000 in monies we can use in 2012 to further promote the breed.  The calendar also goes out to many friends, family, MM lovers and to Brazil helping us spread the word about the beauty and use of the Marchador Horse.

The new website has an on-line pedigree system of USMMA registered horses and Lynn is continuing to add videos and pictures for all horses and additional older pedigree information which goes back to our Brazilian historical roots.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/registry/view-pedigree/#

Our Board of Directors also changed this year. Signa Strom resigned from the Board.  We thank her for her many contributions and wish her the best in her future endeavors. Ellen Farmer, Lusonatica, has been appointed to the Board. The Board also appointed Derek Brown, Vista de Serra, to the Board and we look forward to both their contributions in the future.

The Board appointed Megan Fallwell, Legacy Marchadors to be the USMMA Registrar, effective January 1,2012. Lynn Kelley who was instrumental in creating our registry and working with the Brazilian Association to correct paperwork and establish a close working relationship, has worked closely with Megan over the last few months so that we will have a smooth transition. We have transitioned from the old HorseManager System to WikiHorseWorld, which will give the Registrar and the membership greater flexibility and access to Registry information in the future.   WikiHorseWorld plans to add a Classified Ads section which will be an added benefit.  Many thanks to my spouse for her contributions to the USMMA.

The Board also appointed Aline Oliveira Greene to be our Newsletter Editor.  I am very happy that we found someone to restart this valuable communication tool for the membership. Aline will also help administer the USMMA Facebook and Twitter accounts to encourage contact among the membership.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our April Clinic in Ocala Florida!

    John Kelley, USMMA President
