  • USMMA Registry Survey Project – 2016

Look up your horse (on a laptop or desktop computer!  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/registry/view-pedigree/
Goal: To correct and update the USMMA Horse Registration Database in 2016, including new photos. To encourage people not registering their Marchadors to join the USMMA and registry. If successful, to recommend that this project be repeated every 5 years. As a side benefit, people will also be asked to rejoin the USMMA as part of the survey process if they are not current members.

Project Volunteers: Tresa Smith, Lynn Kelley, Megan Fallwell Thanks to them for their help and support.

    Budget: $0

    What we did:
Emailed all members asking for updates on their horses.
Followed up with phone calls if no response.
    Input new information into Wikihorse.

    Results of the project:
New on-line form created for submitting registration information on a new foal. On the USMMA website. Completed form and photos emails directly to Registrar.
Corrected EVERY MM record for horses in the US and Canada.
    Added country of birth.
    Standardized the registration numbers.
Added the ABCCMM registration number and, if appropriate, the M Brand under markings.
Changed many horse colors to grey.
Changed some horses from stallions to geldings.
Updated owner information and began transfer process for over 10 horses.
    Updated death records.
Added 23 new foals born in 2015 and 2016 to the database. Will be registered as DNA is received.

Not under the scope of the project and new questions raised: Perhaps future projects
Did not update photos unless people submitted them. Many horses now adults still show foal photo.
Did not contact non-USMMA members. Should be done this year or as part of the USMMA membership drive.
Did not update transfer process – and it is clear that people do not understand it.

    Some Numbers and Information:

    • 293 Marchadors in the USMMA database today.
    • 265 Marchadors still alive in the USMMA database today.
    • Added 23 new MM foals born in 2015 and 2016 (not yet fully registered)
    • 37 Marchador owner transfers identified. In the process of collecting $$ if they want the registration. Some are non-members.
    • 63 Marchadors were born in Brazil.
    • 6 Marchadors born in Canada. 24 Marchador horses there in 3 provinces.

Breakdown of horses is below. 4 US states – AZ, CA,  MT  comprise more than 40% of the MMs in North America.  Canada breakdown is BC – 5% , AB, – 3%   SK – 1%.

  • ABCCMM Inspection August 2015 Photos!

All photos at the BC event by Shannon Ford, published on FACEBOOK.

Dr. Kate Barcelos was in Canada presenting her paper at an Equine Conference and stayed on to complete another ABCCMM inspection, the second one in Canada!

Dana Johnsen, USMMA Board Member at Large, organized an Open House around the event and Marchadors from Alberta and British Columbia joined in! Additional invitations and participation from people who wanted to see, meet and ride a Marchador. It looked like a great event.

Kate also visited other breeders in Colorado, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan before heading home to Brazil.

ABCCMM inspection is a prerequisite for dual ABCCMM (Brazilian) registration. It is not required for USMMA registration.

  • President’s Letter! 2014 – the year of the Marchador!

    January 16 2014

Dear USMMA Members and Marchador Friends

Last year, in accordance with the USMMA by-laws we elected a new Board of Directors for the association. I am impressed with the depth, passion, and geographic spread of our new board.     We live from coast to coast and from Saskatoon to Scottsdale.  It is a tribute to how far we have come.  The new board a short bio and how to contact them follows this letter.

In our first meeting held January 12 2014, the board elected officers.

    President. Rick Schatz

    Vice President Jeff Bosley

    Secretary Laurie  Klassen

Treasurer Lynn Kelley  (Eliza Frazer stays on as acting Treasurer for some part of 2014)

I will, with the new board, be working hard to connect with every Marchador owner to create a shared sense of excitement about our opportunities and goals.  In 2014 we will be focused on:

    • Keeping our existing loyal membership and also adding new owners and breeders.
    • Promoting the Marchador breed. In 2014, this will be most apparent with the planned events sponsored by the Brazilian Marchador association, the ABCCMM and APEX at PBR (Professional Bull Riding)events around the U.S.
    • Continuing our tradition of holding a Marchador clinic every year.   It’s a great way to learn and to meet other Marchador owners!   The success of 2013 Mt clinic showed us that.   I will keep you posted with our plans for the 2014 clinic.
    • Facilitating more Marchador owners and breeders to connect to Brazil.   We have a new Brazilian membership status for non-breeders for a $25 fee and will send plans for a trip to their National Show in July.  Over 1000 Marchadors participate at their show!

If you have renewed your USMMA membership, thank you.  We appreciate your support.  If you haven’t,  Rox Rogers and I may be calling on you to consider signing up again.

Hold on to your hats! It will be a great year –  the year of the Marchador!

    Best regards

    Rick Schatz

    USMMA President

Meet the new Board and President

Dana Johnsen, Penticton, BC, Canada    hilltophoofers@gmail.com  (250)-492-8225

Dana is a business owner and lifetime horse person.  She currently has 3 Marchadors and her business is international Nickers Saddlery, makers of the Sensation Ride Treeless saddle.   Her goal with Marchadors is to expand the exposure and knowledge of the Marchador within Canada.

Dana brings to the table for the board artistic ability, international shipping and communication experience and thoughtful decision making.  She is ambitious and passionate about the Marchador breed.   Other passions of hers: sustainable building and energy practices, endurance riding, dog sledding & designing new products.

Jacob Martinez, Riverside CA   tlongojm@aol.com  (951)-808-2183

Jacob is a Marchador breeder operating Rancho de los Cielos.   He has been involved and supportive of the USMMA since its formative years – about 10 years.

Jacob has been around horses and training horses all of his life, since my uncle was the head trainer of the famous White Horses of California, the Camarillo breed.  Rancho de los Cielos follows the ABCCMM tradition of inspection for breeding animals.    Currently, they have 12 Marchadors and have produced over 15 “de los Cielos” foals.   We have sold our foals and also many other Marchadors over the years.  Before Marchadors, they owned and bred Peruvians.

His area of interest area is in advertising and merchandising for the Mangalarga Marchador breed.

Jeffrey S. Bosley  Lumber Bridge, NC   paboz@earthlink.net  (910)-818-4856

Jeff is a retired USAF Major. who spent the last 20 years serving my country while learning leadership skills and obtaining his degree.  Jeff has always loved horses and has been around them his whole life growing up on a farm, but the frequent moves necessary for a career in the USAF made his dream of owning horses a challenge. While researching different breeds 8 years ago, Jeff came across an article about the Mangalarga Marchador in the Guinness book of world records.  He researched this rare breed as well as breeders in the US.  After an opportunity to see the horses first hand, Jeff instantly fell in love with their athleticism and energy wrapped up in a surprising gentle disposition.

Jeff and Michelle currently own 4 Marchadors and are beginning a new adventure in becoming a breeder – SW Future Foal @ LumberBridge.  Jeff brings a love for this breed as well as commitment to its success and his desire to help build the breed here.

Laurie Klassen  Saskatoon, SK, Canada  lauriefklassen@me.com  (306) 382-8219

Laurie owns 1 Marchador gelding (Beethoven) acquired through Summerwind Marchadors and has been very active in her community promoting the MM breed for the last 3 years. She is quite knowledgeable about gaited horses because for the last 10 years, she also bred, raised and trained Tennessee Walking horses.   She still owns 3 TWH, but is no longer breeding.

Laurie is very involved and active in the equine community.  She was President of a women’s horse club for the last 5 years.   2-3 times a year, she hosts clinics and brings in some Master horseman to promote responsible leadership and training for horses.

Laurie and her husband have owned and operated Crestview Auto Service for 30 years.   Hoping to retire soon, but is still actively involved.   From her business and from her equine activities, Laurie’s organizational skills and follow-through are readily apparent to all who work with her.

    Lynn Kelley  Scottsdale, AZ  futurefoal@gmail.com   (602) 999-3915

Lynn bought her first Marchador in 2001 and so has over 10 years of history and experience with the Mangalarga Marchador horses, both here and in Brazil.   With her husband, John, they own and operate SW Future Foal @ Summerwind Marchadors.  SW Marchadors has imported Marchadors in the past and now import frozen semen from Brazil.   17 foals carry the name “do Summerwind”.

Lynn is retired, but her skills are varied from her business careers:  information technology, customer service, marketing and innovation and planning.       Lynn was one of the founding members of the US Mangalarga Marchador Association and has served on the Board for many years in various positions.

Her interests are in improving the quality and genetic diversity of the Marchador breed here and in keeping close ties with Brazil and the other Marchador associations around the world.

    Rox Rogers   Whitefish, MT   highcountrycowgirl@centurytel.net

Rox’s love for the breed began when I purchased a gelding from Tresa Smith, Lazy T.  Shortly afterwards, she and her husband traveled to Brasil with the intention of Hugh becoming a certifying Vet for the breed here in the US.   They met a number of Brasilian breeders and learned about the Breed Standards and breed requirements for registry.  During the two weeks of visiting numerous breeding farms, Rox was able to spend a week of riding and studying at Desempenho dressage school with Bjarke Rink.

Since that time Rox has strengthened her interest in showing the Marchador breed to their full potential.  She studies in Centered Riding which is helpful in every discipline.  Rox currently owns 2 Marchadors and have been involved in showing the horses in the riding disciplines of Reining, Jumping, Backcountry trail riding, and recently in Western Dressage.  Rox assisted setting up the Montana Sela de Ouro in September, 2013,  providing a horse for another participant.

Rox is interested in assisting with Breed Standards, Performance Sports and showing the breed to the public through various venues, especially the APEX/ABCCMM/PBR promotions coming up in 2014.

    Tia Nelson     Helena MT  drtiadvm@aol.com  (406)  442-0188

Tia and her husband Derek have enjoyed the breed since our introduction to it in 2001.  They breed Marchadors with the ranch suffix Vista de Serra.  Tia has  traveled to Brazil two times, once in 2001 to assist in picking out breeding stock for one of my clients who raises Marchadors and the second time in 2007 to spend 3 weeks with Getulio, Henrique, Jose Eduardo and others to learn to be an inspector for this breed.  Tia has been active as an adviser for the USMMA on the Breeds’ Standards Committee and has also helped with the discussion about the inspection process.  She feels that  the integrity of this breed is more likely to be preserved in the United States and Canada if there is an inspection process similar or identical to the inspection process used in Brazil by the ABCCMM.

As an equine veterinarian who is interested in horses in general and this breed in particular, Tia brings solid knowledge and good information to the table.

Most recently, she and her my husband worked to help make the Sela de Ouro ride a great success here in Montana in Sept 2013.   They provided horses, a fun supper (in spite of the storm!), and extended our hospitality to the Judge of the Show, Tiago, and a couple from Montana who are also breeders

Rick Schatz, Kaw City, Ok.  rick.schatz@yahoo.com  (580) 269-2967

Rick and his wife Liz were both raised on ranches in Northern Oklahoma.  Rick,  a USMC Vietnam Veteran, has now retired from a long career working and living overseas with the oil industry.  He resided with his family in Scotland, Kuwait, Qatar, Azerbaijan, Thailand, and Brazil to just name a few countries, he experienced during his career.

He was introduced to the Mangalarga Marchador horses while living in Brazil.  Liz started riding the horses with other expat women as a social past time.  She was very impressed with the horse’s temperament and smooth ride and was able to convince Rick also to start riding them.  This started an adventure in 2000 that evolved from buying registered horses for him and Liz to ride.  They then acquired a 500 acre Fazenda (farm) in Brasil and increased their herd size, breeding mares, from championship Brazilian stock.

Later in 2005, back in the U.S., Rick was able to import a young stallion and some mares from his breeding on the Fazenda to his Flying Oak’s Ranch in Oklahoma.  Now with his Stallion “Ator Fazenda Zouga” along with the original mares and other purchased mares from US Mangalarga Marchador breeders, Flying Oaks is home to over 20 registered Mangalarga Marchadors at any one time.

  • WikiHorseWorld Pedigree Update

Abaiba Remo – is your Marchador a grandchild?

All of the North American Mangalarga Marchadors AND their ancestors have been added to our new pedigree system.  It was a big effort to transfer our data manually.

938 Mangalarga Marchador horses are in our database. (206 are registered with the USMMA, but that number includes some horses that are now deceased).  All of the North American horses have photos and overall, 37% have photos.  Like Ancestry.com, you can go explore your horse’s lineage.  You can find them in the Registry section of this website on the page labeled View Pedigree.

Information about the horses was added if it was available, like date of birth, color, registration number etc.  However, if you look at the record, there is lots more room to add information about your horse – shows, awards, disciplines, height, weight, any kind of write-up.  If you find errors, want to change the photo or want to add more information or video to your horse’s record, please send that request to the USMMA registrar.

You are able to download and print your horse’s pedigree whenever you want.  On the pedigree form, you will notice a scannable code (using any smart phone) that will take you directly to the website and that pedigree on the website.

The USMMA registrar, now Megan McClarney Fallwell,  will continue to issue the official registration document and the foal registration procedures remain the same.

    Future Plans:

Classified ads will facilitate MM sales or stallion stud services. Photo shows Flying Oaks 2 year old colts.

Around April 2012, I will be adding and testing the WikiHorseWorld Classified Ads system if they have it completed on time.

WikiHorseWorld currently offers four ad “categories” for Horses, Products, Services, and Events. They will be developing four additional ad categories for Equine Real Estate, Trailers, Saddles, and Horse Hay (a total of 8 Classified Ad categories).

There will be options for simple ads and premium ads.  Premium ads would include photos and videos.

During this timeframe is when WikiHorseWorld anticipates that members will be able to add photos, videos from your computer, and videos from YouTube to your Marchador’s pedigree.  The classified ads and the horse’s pedigree, pictures and videos will be displayed on the USMMA website and also WikiHorseWorld’s website.

Destiny do Summerwind and Gayle Hamilton, TX

I grew up with horses, but then when I turned 30, I joined the Foreign Service and started living overseas, so I could no longer own horses.  Luckily, in most of the countries where I lived, I could find horses to find, but it just wasn’t he same.

When I knew that I would be retiring from the State Dept, I started doing research.  I had grown up with Quarter Horses and Arabs, but due to back problems, I wanted a gaited horse and I wanted one that was unique.  I stumbled onto the Marchador and found Lynn and John Kelley.   They were awesome!  They answered my questions, provided photos and invited me to come visit anytime.  They were so proud of the breed and so welcoming to someone exploring the breed that I thought that if they were representational of owners, then count me in!  I have found over time that everyone I have encountered with the Marchador has been very friendly and proud of their breed.

Chanel de Miami with days old Destiny

I was still overseas, so decided to do the Future Foal.  Lynn provided me photos and info and I chose a mare.  Well, I got a colt, but really wanted a filly.  Another buyer got a filly, but wanted a colt, so we swapped!  I retired, bought some land and got ready and when Destiny was 8 months old, had her brought to Texas.  Unfortunately, because she is so pretty and was the baby here, everyone has spoiled her.   She is a “brat”, but I love her and as she gets older she is getting much better.

Destiny having fun as a youngster in TX

She is 3 years old now and I have been doing ground work with her.  She lunges with or without a saddle, has jumped a small obstacle and walked over a tarp.    She is smart, pretty (I love her elfin ears), and is a joy.  I can’t wait until I am able to ride her, which I hope will be later this year.  I am heading back to Africa to work for six months so will wait until I return.

    She is my Destiny.

She is stretching to make 14.3H so hopefully the extra few months will allow her to get a little more growth.  I can’t thank Lynn and John enough for Destiny.  Sadly, her dam (Chanel de Miami) and baby sister were lost in 2011, so that makes her even more special to me.

  • Frozen Semen = Vigor

    by Lynn Kelley

We met the precious cargo at Scottsdale Equine Reproductive Center!

In 2011, we were unbelievably excited to receive the first shipment of frozen semen exported from Brasil.  Ho-hum, you say.  It happens all the time.  NOT!   We had worked for over four years to see this happen.  There were two main issues.

In Brasil, each breed is regulated by the Ministry of Agriculture.  For this to work, the ABCCMM had to modify its registration regulations, which had previously not allowed the use of frozen semen.  Then the Ministry of Agriculture had to create the rules for exportation for the MM and approve veterinarian clinics for collection and exportation.   To our knowledge, there are only 2 clinics in Brasil that have been approved so far.

Ximoio de Maripa semen arrived in 2011 from Agro Maripa! He is pure blood Abaiba of very old genetics.

The second is that there is not much demand for frozen semen in Brasil.  With so many horses and land, often the preferred method of breeding is still live cover.  For us to get Brasilian Marchador semen, the breeder needed to want to do this for us – for the good of the Marchador breed around the world.

Enter Mr. Marcelo Baptista, owner of Agro Maripa who fulfilled our dream.   Agro Maripa collected and shipped 3 Maripa stallions of excellent quality and impeccable lineage to us in March 2011.

Talisma Kafe, from Haras Elfar, is a stallion whose semen has been collected and we are working through the importation process for 2012

Frozen semen (and later frozen embryos) is very important for the future of the Marchador breed here in the U.S.  Imported frozen semen adds many things:

    • Diversity – new bloodlines, new individuals to the North American gene pool.
    • Quality – these stallions are first-rate individuals, champions in their own right and proven producers.  Often not for sale, frozen semen offers a way to bring their blood here.
    • Excitement – it is exciting to be able to have a larger catalogue of beautiful Marchador stallions to choose from.
Today, there are 13 USMMA registered breeding stallions in North America. We froze La Paz Jivago (100 breeding doses) before gelding him for owner Rox Rogers.

For us the diversity and quality were the key items.  The excitement is just an added bonus!  We could have an immediate boost in quality in one generation.  For diversity, one could argue that we are okay there for now.  Because we  are fortunate to have many breeding stallions here in the U.S., enough to breed the mares and cross-breed the resulting next generation.  But what about the third, fourth and fifth generation?

We may not be alive to see those MM foals born, but we are doing this for them.  Continued importation is the key for maintaining and improving the quality of the Mangalarga Marchador breed here.  We plan to import more semen, from different bloodlines and make it available  – a semen bank – either through the SW Future Foal franchise or the M Foundation.

Connie Claire with La Paz Jivago foal DaVinci do Summerwind. DaVinci was the first MM foal born using frozen semen in the U.S. We are expecting a 2012 foal from Oma de Maripa using his frozen semen!

We would encourage MM breeders to freeze their stallion’s’ semen here if it’s viable  (before they are gelded or get too old).  Perhaps your great grandchildren would like to have a foal from him someday!

Frozen semen lasts forever.  It is a great investment in the future of the Mangalarga Marchador breed!

  • President’s Letter December 2012

    by John Kelley

Happy Holidays to all USMMA Members!

    2011 in Review!

It has been another busy year for the USMMA and the growth of the MM breed here in North America.

We held our first MM Gait Clinic in Texas. Many thanks to Megan and Colin Fallwell of Legacy Marchadors for sponsoring the event.  Connie Claire plans to build on this tradition with an April 2012 Clinic in Ocala Florida. See the post on that for details.

I hope everyone has had an opportunity to visit our new USMMA website,  which Colin Fallwell and Lynn Kelley created this year. Funding for this project was generously provided by Susan and Holm Neumann, Cascade Marchadors. Check out the section on the marcha gaits which includes video of Brazilian Marchadors correctly performing the unique Marcha Picada and Marcha Batida gaits.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/breed/the-marcha-gaits/

We created our fun, online horse competition, based on the Brazilian Functional Test.  We will continue this in 2012 and encourage everyone to try it doing the test with their horses!   Check out the details on our website.  Many thanks to Signa Strom and Theresa Longo for the ideas and development of this and to Ellen Farmer for translating.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/shows-and-events/complete-horse-test/

In July, five USMMA members traveled to Brazil to celebrate the 30th National Competition of the MM.  The ABCCMM MM generously invited US media to attend all or part of their 9 day tour to MM farms and the Show.   As a result of this media effort, the Marchador was on RFD-TV several times  – on RFD TV LIVE and also on THE HORSE SHOW with Rick Lamb.  We will be getting copies of the broadcasts for our use.  http://youtu.be/wfNjEjCuIxw

Our USMMA calendar is done for 2012, this time thanks to USMMA member Ellen Farmer.  With broader participation, this fund-raiser should top $1,000 in monies we can use in 2012 to further promote the breed.  The calendar also goes out to many friends, family, MM lovers and to Brazil helping us spread the word about the beauty and use of the Marchador Horse.

The new website has an on-line pedigree system of USMMA registered horses and Lynn is continuing to add videos and pictures for all horses and additional older pedigree information which goes back to our Brazilian historical roots.  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/registry/view-pedigree/#

Our Board of Directors also changed this year. Signa Strom resigned from the Board.  We thank her for her many contributions and wish her the best in her future endeavors. Ellen Farmer, Lusonatica, has been appointed to the Board. The Board also appointed Derek Brown, Vista de Serra, to the Board and we look forward to both their contributions in the future.

The Board appointed Megan Fallwell, Legacy Marchadors to be the USMMA Registrar, effective January 1,2012. Lynn Kelley who was instrumental in creating our registry and working with the Brazilian Association to correct paperwork and establish a close working relationship, has worked closely with Megan over the last few months so that we will have a smooth transition. We have transitioned from the old HorseManager System to WikiHorseWorld, which will give the Registrar and the membership greater flexibility and access to Registry information in the future.   WikiHorseWorld plans to add a Classified Ads section which will be an added benefit.  Many thanks to my spouse for her contributions to the USMMA.

The Board also appointed Aline Oliveira Greene to be our Newsletter Editor.  I am very happy that we found someone to restart this valuable communication tool for the membership. Aline will also help administer the USMMA Facebook and Twitter accounts to encourage contact among the membership.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our April Clinic in Ocala Florida!

    John Kelley, USMMA President
