Effective August 1st, Lynn Kelley, a founding member and President of the USMMA stepped down as President and Vice President, Tresa Smith, also a founding member of the association, assumed the role of President.

Tresa is an owner, breeder and importer of Mangalarga Marchadors in Montana. She discovered the breed while working in Brazil during the 1990s and decided to import horses to the US. She chose the Tabatinga bloodline as her speciality because of their hardiness and cow sense to work her ranch and Angus cows in Montana.

Lynn Kelley will stay on the board in the role of Registrar. The USMMA has registered more than 90% of the Marchadors born in the US. Horses registered in Brazil and imported to the US are automatically registered with the USMMA, with the submission of DNA.

The USMMA remains focused on introducing the Marchador across the country in the coming years. In 2007, Marchadors were registered in the new states of North Carolina and South Carolina and a new country, Canada. For further expansion and improved genetic diversity, the Kelleys are working with the ABCCMM (the Brazilian association with over 200,000 registered horses) to import frozen semen and frozen embryos to the U.S.

  • Board Meeting

Our thanks to Tresa Smith, MT for hosting the August meeting.

A discussion was held concerning the Marchador breed standard of the ABCCMM. After the discussion, it was concluded that there may be some areas of difference between what the USMMA members want and th ABCCMM. A breed standards committee was formed, chaired by Tresa Smith to make recommendations at the next meeting.

A proposal to begin a half-Marchador registry was introduced. There were split opinions with some members stauch supporters and others against it as a loss of focus during these critical years of building breed awareness. A motion was made to encourage half-Marchador owners to join as associate members to determine the level of interest during 2006.

There was a sharing of marketing ideas around advertising, shows and other promotions.

Association business on meetings, elections, budgets etc took up the remainder of the meeting.

  • First ABCCMM Inspection done outside of Brasil

Drs. Jose Eduardo Teves and Getulio Tadeau Vieira traveled to the US in early May to inspect U.S. born Marchador horses. USMMA members who are also members of the ABCCMM wanted to have their horses maintain Brazilian registry as well. The Brazilian association has strict guidelines and it inspects all horses for conformation, gait and temperment at age three before the horses are fully registered. They also inspected the U.S. born foals for “temporary” registration. The knowledge, history and tradition carried with the inspectors impressed all of the breeders they visited across the U.S. Together, the two men have over 47 years of experience with the Mangalarga Marchador. This is the first inspection done outside of the Marchador’s native country of Brazil.
