    Rick’s Retirement Letter

    Retirement Time
Announcing Our Retirement from Raising Mangalarga Marchadors at Flying Oaks Ranch!

Dear friends, clients and fellow horse enthusiasts:

After numerous remarkable years spent raising and tending to the magnificent Mangalarga Marchadors at Flying Oaks Ranch, we have made the heartfelt choice to retire. This journey has been brimming with joy, growth, and cherished memories, and I am profoundly grateful for the support and trust you have extended to us and our horses.

    Our journey with Mangalarga Marchadors:
Our Mangalarga Marchador journey began in 1999 when we relocated to Brazil, settling in the picturesque state of Rio de Janeiro. Liz wasted no time riding horses with her Brazilian friends. She convinced me to join her, insisting these horses were unlike any I’d experienced back home.
In 2000, we took the leap and purchased our first Mangalarga Marchadors. Our passion for these magnificent horses grew, leading us to acquire five more mares from Tosana Fazenda. This renowned farm housed AJ Netuno and 443 Marengo, esteemed past Mangalarga Marchador National Champion Stallions.

With these exceptional bloodlines, primarily Abaiba, we established our breeding venture on our 200-hectare farm, Fazenda Zouga. Here, we dedicated ourselves to raising and nurturing these exceptional horses, known for their unique gait, versatility, and gentle temperament.

Retiring from my professional life, I returned to our Oklahoma home with a heavy heart. Although leaving Brazil was bittersweet, the invaluable experiences and memories remain. Our dedication to the Mangalarga Marchador breed persists, and I’ve made frequent visits back to Brazil to stay connected with our roots and the wonderful friends we made there.

With the assistance of a good friend, we successfully imported our young stallion, Ator Fazenda Zouga. His bloodlines connect to both the Tosana Champions and mares, marking the inception of our Mangalarga Marchador breeding program here at Flying Oaks Ranch.

Over the years, our unwavering commitment to this remarkable breed has resulted in the registration of nearly eighty Marchadors with the United States Mangalarga Marchadors Association. These magnificent horses have found homes across the lower forty-eight states and even in Canada, spanning from coast to coast. The honour of selling and shipping fillies and a pregnant mare to a renowned breeder in France speaks to the quality of our breeding program.

Each horse we have raised holds a special place in our hearts, and the memories they created are invaluable. From Flying Oaks Windsmoke to Wizard, Pegasus, Zeus, Phantom, Valentine, Diablo, and Netuno, their legacy lives on.

We extend our gratitude to Dana Johnsen of Rocke Ridge Ranch for creating the PowerPoint presentation. Dana has acquired several Flying Oaks horses over the years, contributing to their training. These horses have found good homes across Canada and the Lower 48, except for the ones she keeps.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. I eagerly anticipate the Mangalarga Marchadors’ legacy will thrive through the passion and dedication of their new owners.

Warm regards, Rick & Liz Schatz, Flying Oaks Ranch. www.flyingoaksranch.com

  • AZ – Alan Villaca Clinic

Hosted by the USMMA and Summerwind Marchadors, the clinic ran Feb 14th to 16th at Silver Stables, Phoenix, AZ. Silver Stables also provided many of the Marchadors shown and used at the clinic.

The weather was good. The food was good. The horses worked hard for different riders! Alan Villaca was outstanding, just a wealth of information and exercises to use with our Marchador horses.

After the day of videos and the breed characteristics, we practiced – evaluating conformation, angles and proportions of our Marchadors at the clinic. or there at Silver Stables.

Clinic attendees asked questions in writing before the clinic, asked during the clinic and Alan answered them all and not with generalities but with answers to each specific owner and rider as he got to know them and their horse.

He taught four exercises that would improve the marcha focused on correct bend and disassociation of the legs. When the horse was supple enough, then he added the impulsion to go. On some horses, the most comfortable marcha was found at a slower speed and some at a faster speed.

Each rider was asked to perform the exercises on different horses and it was surprising to see what Alan made look so easy, was very hard. We appreciated learning things we could practice and home. And we appreciated his sharing and skill.

We will be planning another clinic and possible show for next year and hope to have this become an annual event in our Marchador calendar.

  • USMMA / ABCCMM Registration Team Announcement

The USMMA Board members working on registration issues with the USMMA and the ABCCMM have created some new ways to work together and to make registrations run better for our members.

The team of our Registrar Randy Conilogue, our Treasurer Lynn Kelley and Carolina Peterson have already made improvements.

    Effective immediately:

One is the creation of a new registration email address which all team members can review.  Each team member will learn the other’s job responsibilities for more understanding and depth within the association. The new email address is registrar@namarchador.org

The second improvement is to assist USMMA members that are also ABCCMM members (Brazil) in the payment of annual ABCCMM dues and other fees.  The ABCCMM payment is often difficult accessing the ABCCMM website to pay by credit card. Please let Lynn Kelley, our Treasurer, know you would like help. Lynn will bill you for your ABCCMM fees (in US dollars) and send you a receipt from the ABCCMM after we pay ABCCMM fees for you (in Brazilian reals).

    Coming in March:

The third idea is to create a MARCH MADNESS registration campaign to get more Marchadors registered with the USMMA that have not been reported or that are registered in the ABCCMM only.  Having these horses included in our MM database will help us to track the horses and the owners here in North America.

    The team members:

For the USMMA – Randy Conilogue does the registration papers issued and transfers. Lynn Kelley collects the money owed for each transaction. Carolina and Lynn will learn the registration database being created so there is backup and also more people who may be able to assist during times of larger volumes of requests.

For the ABCCMM – Lynn Kelley has been a liaison with Eliana Martins, ABCCMM, and with Dr.George Vilar , ABCCMM, regarding ABCCMM inspection and membership issues. Carolina joins her and is a valuable asset because she speaks Portuguese. Carolina will assume more of this responsibility during 2024. We consider Dr. George Vilar and Eliana Martins to be part of this team.

In 2024, Carolina and Lynn will be learning more about the USMMA as a nucleo of the ABCCMM and become more active as a nucleo.

    For both USMMA and ABCCMM:

We share DNA records for registration and Parental Verification between the 2 associations. The USMMA can assist our members and the ABCCMM in collecting and paying ABCCMM fees.

  • The Importer Series – Article 6 CC Bellandi

The USMMA is invested in documenting our history and tracking each of our precious Mangalarga Marchador horses here in North America.

Years ago, we wrote THE IMPORTERS, a series of articles about the history of the Marchador breed coming to the U.S. and the breeders who brought them in.

To celebrate this new year, we happily release the newest article written by Darby Minow Smith about Claudia Bellandi, CC Bellandi, Ocala FL. Claudia is continuing to import Mangalarga Marchadors from Brazil, a fresh start in importing live animals for her farm and others.

This is the sixth installment of the series – CC Bellandi.

It’s exciting and so good for our future to grow the numbers and bloodlines represented in North America.
