  • PHOTO CONTEST 2020

We want to see new faces, horse faces that is, so we decided to start a photography competition at USMMA. We will use the contest photos to create a USMMA photography bank and to publish a USMMA 2021 calendar. Tom Sliter, fine art photographer from Washington, D.C. has agreed to judge the contest.

The winner of the contest will win $50 USMMA credit, be featured in the Fall Edition of the USMMA Journal and will be given the opportunity to be the cover of the 2021 USMMA Calendar.
Send your entries to the USMMA for posting on the USMMA website for all to enjoy during the contest.  The USMMA website limits the size of the photographs posted there, so we are wanting the large, original files to be sent to us via email to Lynn Kelley, lynnkelley@me.com.  We are asking anyone who enters the contest to grant permission to the USMMA for the use of photos and subsequently are asking you to sign a release form. That form is attached to this email.
Please include your name, the name for the photo credit (if any), and the registered name of your horse in the photo in the body of the email and make each image a separate attachment. Entries must be submitted no later than September 1,2020.

About the Judge:  Tom Sliter is a fine art photographer in Washington, D.C. He is a member of Multiple Exposures Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia , has received numerous awards and recognitions and has participated in exhibitions s across the country. In 2013 he photographed the USMMA Clinic and Sela de Ouro held in Helena, Mt. His work can be viewed at tsliterphotography.com.

Tom’s TIPS: The internet has many videos and websites with suggestions for equine photography. Just remember these basic tips
–Abhor blur. Keep the camera steady and your subject in focus. Use a tripod or fence post for support, if needed.
    —Avoid cluttered or distracting background.
–Try to photograph in the morning or late afternoon, not at mid-day. The angled light will generally give more pleasing results.
–Try to fill the frame with your subject. The more you have to crop image, the less resolution it will have.
—Pay attention to the composition of your image. The “Rule of Thirds” (Google it) is a commonly used guide for good composition.
–Watch the light and dark areas of your image. The eye is attracted to lighter areas in the photograph. A dark horse against a light background can confuse the eye (although a silhouette can be great.)
–If your camera allows it, photograph in RAW format. It allows more flexibility in editing. (All entries need to be submitted as jpeg files.)
–DSLR cameras work best, but iPhones (7 or later) can produce good images
    –And remember . EARS UP

  • Save the dates! AZ MM EVENT!

    WHEN:   JANUARY 24 – 26, 2020
PLACE:   17 RANCH, SCOTTSDALE AZ 85262
    WHAT:  FIRST ANNUAL SCOTTSDALE SHOW

WHO: We have just started planning this event!.   I am chairing the committee and asking members to join that committee now.    We will work on the details and get a memo out to you before Thanksgiving with more.
DETAILS:  We will be having trail rides into the desert and ABCCMM Sport Competitions.    Here are the initial thoughts of what will be happening!

We have reserved an covered arena and 3 one-bedroom guest casitas for the event.  An additional apartment is also available at this time, but will rent soon.    There are horse facilities there for a limited number of horses but lots of facilities close by if we need more.   There are no trailer hook-ups at that facility, but there are some nearby.    We also have several members in the Scottsdale area and hopefully some of them also will offer accommodations.   There are a LOT of hotels and other options in this area as well.

Arizona has about 20 Mangalarga Marchadors here and that number swells with winter visitors from Canada.  It may also be that there will be MM horses you can use here available if you’d like to learn and ride, but can’t bring a horse.  That will be determined.

Show entry fees, audit fees and casita rental fees will be charged.    While the USMMA underwrites each event we hold,  the fees will help fund the awards we give, the food and refreshments for our participants.   Only USMMA members are allowed to ride because of insurance, but we will invite friends, family and neighbors to come to watch!   It will be a fun event!
    Dr. George Vi

lar, our ABCCMM inspector, is in Brazil this month training to be a judge for the competition.  Lynn Kelley has the Sport Classes Rules and Regulations (working equitation / functional test, barrels, pole bending etc) being translated in Brazil.   We will get those out as soon as possible to all members.

    • Thursday January 23 – available for arrival and check in
    • Friday January 24 – am trail ride for those who come early.
    • January 24 – noon lunch, check in and pm training sessions on the competition
    • Saturday January 25 – am and pm, MM classes yet to be selected, pm pool party
    • Sunday January 26 – OPTIONAL DAY You can leave or stay for a trail ride and/or MM barn tours in the morning.  Checkout is 11 am.   pm  ABCCMM inspection.

    PLANNING:

Scottsdale is close to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and is also serviced by Mesa Airport and Scottsdale Airport.    It is a major hub so airline tickets should be reasonable.   Scottsdale is jumping during the winter months.  For information about what else is going on, you can visit https://www.experiencescottsdale.com/

We hope you will be able to make this event!    We will fill in the details in just a few weeks.   We would like to have more events in 2020 as well so if you have an idea for your area, please contact me.

    Sincerely, Jeff Bosley, paboz24@gmail.com

USMMA President and Scottsdale Committee chair

  • USMMA Annual Meeting

This presentation was prepared and delivered April 7, 2019 by Jeff Bosley, USMMA President. All USMMA Members were invited via ZOOM.

  • USMMA Videos out on Youtube

    Dear USMMA Members:

In January, Randy Conilogue, our USMMA Registrar, volunteered for an important project.   To create a video show that would run on a large screen TV during the Mane Event the first weekend in April 2018.   He created 14 videos.    It was a great success!  Many USMMA members contributed new photos and we also used photos that we had in our archives and website from years past.

The result of this effort is also available for running on an iPad or computer by contacting Randy.    You can use the videos to showcase the breed at a booth or presentation.   At the Mane Event, we ran a continuous loop so there was always a beautiful Mangalarga Marchador on the screen.   It attracted a lot of attention and viewers.

Take a look!    We have created a youtube account and uploaded the videos there.   There are 14 videos with the photos grouped into categories.   We are also creating a playlist of other videos from Brazil that showcase the beauty and movement of the MM breed.
Thank you Randy, for such a great job.

    Jeff Bosley
    USMMA President

    p.s.
If you would like to share your newest photos, or if you have not yet contributed to our collection, here are the guidelines for submission:

Sending us photos for the USMMA website or videos:

    1. Horses need to be registered with the USMMA or the ABCCMM to be included in the video.

    2. Photos need to be high resolution and JPEG files. That is determined by the number of pixels and the size of the file. JPEG files should be at least 1M if they are truly high resolution.

    3. Photos should be labeled with the following information: USMMA Registration Name of the Marchador, Owner Name, Farm Name (if applicable), State or Province and Photographer credit (if applicable.)

    4. We would prefer photos to be a horizontal format. Showing vertical photos on a large screen TV is not as attractive. We would like to fill the screen.

    5. We would like to get photos of EVERY single Marchador in North America to be showcased in our video. However, the video producer, Randy Conilogue will decide if your submission can be used. We will make every effort to work with you to help you create or find photos of your horse that we can use.

    6. Please email photos to drrlc@aol.com. If you have a large number of files, you can use dropbox.com and just email the link to your photos to Randy.

    7. OPTIONAL – you can also send us video, but most video is not high enough quality to air on a large screen.

  • ABCCMM (Brazilian Registry) Inspection Planning

    Dear USMMA Members:

Tia Nelson, Haras Vista da Serra,   has requested an ABCCMM (Brazilian MM association) inspection in MONTANA during the last week of June.    We are sending out this notification to facilitate coordination with our members who may also need an ABCCMM inspection to double register their Marchador horses with that association.   Coordinating with this first inspection could save money in transportation fees for you if the timing works for you.   If June does not work, we also know that other USMMA/ABCCMM members in Arizona are planning another inspection trip later during the fall and we will keep you apprised of any inspection visit dates in order to make this process easier for you.
We are fortunate to have an ABCCMM inspector Dr. George Vilar, here in the US, in Florida.   Any ABCCMM member can request an inspection visit from him at any time of their own convenience.  His email is dr.georgevilar@hotmail.com.
The USMMA does not require inspection of Marchadors for registration.  However, we believe the ABCCMM inspection process is a valuable tool in evaluating and preserving the quality of the Marchador breed, especially for breeding animals.   And a number of North American breeders and owners carry both the USMMA registration and the ABCCMM registration on their horses, so we assist in this and in other cooperative efforts with the Brazilian association.
The first document 2018 ABCCMM inspection memo describes the ABCCMM registration and inspection process.
The second document lists the North American Marchador horses that might be ready for ABCCMM inspection as of this moment.   This list does not list all the MM horses that may be ABCCMM ELIGIBLE, so if you have horses or details to add, please let us know.
Please reply before June 8th  if you would like to participate in this inspection visit, but the sooner, the better.    More details and scheduling will occur with the individual members who sign up.
    Randy Conilogue, USMMA Registrar
    Lynn Kelley, ABCCMM liaison

  • USMMA Events 2018! Mane Event March 30-April 1

    Dear USMMA members:

SAVE THE DATES! The Mane Event will be held at Westworld, Scottsdale, AZ from March 30-April 1. For more information, please visit their website at: https://scottsdale.maneeventexpo.com

This show is an excellent opportunity to promote the Mangalarga Marchador breed in an area that attracts tourists from all over as well as a large local population. Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the U.S. The USMMA had a booth last year, we did 2 short demonstrations of the breed in the main arena and we had horses at the event for people to meet and have their pictures taken (“Meet a Marchador”).

We plan to have a USMMA booth and presence there again this year, and we would like as many members as possible to be represented and participate in the USMMA plans.

You can participate in 3 ways:

    • Be present in person! Please come, with or without a horse! You can just enjoy the show, or be a volunteer. Contact me if you would like to volunteer in any capacity.
    • Be present in materials! Send in business cards, brochures or other information to hand out at the booth. All breeders will be listed in the USMMA breeder handout.
    • Be present in photos! Randy Conilogue is creating a video full of Mangalarga Marchador horses that will run in a continuous loop for all three days of the event.Below are more details and deadlines about the Mane Event. Please note – organizing this event requires time from our volunteers, and the deadlines listed below are critical to allow sufficient time to properly produce the quality presentation that we all want to showcase our extraordinary breed.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments.

Jeff Bosley, USMMA President and Mane Event Committee Chair  paboz24@gmail.com

Adrienne C. Scheck, Mane Event Coordinator
D.J. Sims, Mane Event Demo Coordinator

    Coming in person!

    1. The Mane Event has arranged for discounts on 2 airlines to fly here. Please see https://scottsdale.maneeventexpo.com/attend/getting-there/. They also will be arranging discounts with hotels, but these are not listed on the website yet. Westworld does have an RV park so you can camp there.
    2. The USMMA Mane Event Committee will be trying to arrange several events and get-togethers during the Mane Event, like an open barn tour of the Marchador farms in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. More details will come out as these plans are developed.
    3. Please send us your travel plans (dates/times) so we can set up USMMA events (local barn tours, social gatherings, etc)

Bringing a horse for the demo/”Meet a Marchador”

DEADLINE FOR NOTIFYING THE USMMA MANE EVENT COMMITTEE IS FEBRUARY 14.

    1. Your horse must be registered with the USMMA to participate with the USMMA MANE Event program.
    2. If you are bringing your horse from out of state you will need documentation of a Coggins test and health certificate
    3. You are responsible for the reserving a stall and the cost of the stall (includes shavings), and for a share of the stall we will use to store grooming items, etc. Horse owners must purchase food for their horses and provide a water bucket and items to clean their stalls. You are also responsible for being there with your horse for the “Meet a Marchador” time slots.
    4. Stall rental is $110 for the weekend or $55 for a day. Shavings and feed are purchased at Westworld.
    5. DJ Sims is in charge of the horse demos and barn presence. Our goal is to maintain rider and horse safety, and to show the gait, versatility and temperament of the MM. We are likely to be in the large indoor arena at Westworld. If your horse has not been in a venue like this you need to come the day before the event begins (March 29) so she can see how your horse reacts. She has the final decision regarding participation.
    6. We will try to have the Mane Event assign USMMA horses in stalls close to each other. There will be a small table for literature and a release form for people that want to get close to the horses and take selfies with them. Stalls will have signs with the MM logo, a description of the breed, the horses’ name and picture (you must provide the copy for this) and an “in case of emergency” contact list for your horse.
    7. We will rent one stall for all of us to store tack, grooming and first aid supplies, etc. This will be locked at night.

(Please note: ABCCMM registered horses owned by a USMMA owner are automatically eligible for registration with the USMMA at no additional cost. We require only verification of the horse, proof of ownership and if the Marchador is a breeding animal, the DNA record on file for future parental verification. Please contact Randy Conilogue drrlc@aol.com for registration of your Marchador horses.)

Sending materials for the USMMA booth:

DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING MATERIALS FOR THE USMMA MANE EVENT IS MARCH 14

  • USMMA Board Elections – Please VOTE!

The USMMA elections for the Board of Directors is about to begin.   Please vote to approve your association board!   You will be receiving an electronic ballot via email from BALLOTBIN.com.    The election will be open to run from Sunday December 3rd to Sunday December 10th.  If you do not receive a ballot in the mail, please contact me, Alessandra Deerinck so we can make sure we have the correct email on file.
(Your email notification may say TEST, but it is the real deal.   The notice went out automatically before we had updated the notification message.)

Below is a letter from our President, recapping the USMMA’s year in review.

We are currently at 92 annual or lifetime members.   We believe it is the first time we have passed the 90 mark and would like to shoot for over 100 members in 2018!
We have $10,000 in our bank account – holding steady each year.   Our annual budget is $6,000 – $8,000 depending on the events and promotions planned for the year.   Every year, our operating budget goes to funding the website, registration supplies, mailing and the show subsidy awards for members ($250 each).   Additionally, we like to support horse expositions and events in each region with a USMMA booth and materials.    Last year, we funded re-creation of our booth show kit with banners and brochures.   This “show kit”  is available to ship to your next MM event.   We missed the mark in 2017 when Equitana Open Air – October 2017,  the event to be our annual USMMA event was canceled on short notice.    We achieved other goals and survived other losses, replacing 2 board members and naming a new USMMA registrar, Randy Conilogue.

One of my goals as President was to encourage us to work together more as a team and to have fun with our Marchador horses.   We all want to succeed – whether it be one owner, one horse, or a breeding barn.   Getting press and making news is a good thing for the Marchador breed.   Everyone benefits by the name recognition and exposure.

We are in a strong position to continue our path to success.   Please vote and participate in your association.     It is our volunteers that make good things happen!

    Best regards,
    Jeff Bosley
    USMMA President
