  • Breed Opportunity for the Marchador

    Dear USMMA members,

I  have something I would like to share with all of you.

Because of my horse training business, I have spoken about the Mangalarga Marchador breed to a Professor from the University of Kentucky. This contact has developed into another  one from a different institution. I have been contacted by Professor Guest and Mattfeld,  from the University of British Columbia about a very interesting, and innovative project about humanity and horses.

The Mangalarga Marchador breed is being considered to be part of the opening launch of the database, and they asked me to be the primary contact for the USMMA.

    The Project
Breed: The Making of Modern Identity
    —structured in three sections :

    1. The development of a partnerships with breed organizations that will help identify and acquire content for a free, online database of digitized documents related to breed history that will serve scholars, breed organizations, breeders/breed enthusiasts, and the general public.
    2. Scholarly publications that stimulate scholarship of equine breed, and help consolidate an international network of scholars. The first part is a collection of essays about equine breed, that is currently being developed

    3. A traveling museum exhibit that will serve the interests of both scholars and breed organizations, promoting public interest both in specific breeds, and in the historical interconnection, and development of horse and human identity.
They have partnered with a museum for this aspect of the project, to allow teachers to visit with classes, and then “teach” issues raised by the exhibit in the classroom. The database will be one of the resources for the historical material.

At the moment the project is in the very initial stage, which is building content for the database.
The initial phase is a collection of data, and the assembly of a database about the equine breeds.

The first type of documents they are seeking for are:
    – History of the breed or of key moments (decisions about standards or designation of foundation lines; movement of the breed globally; debate about the direction the breed should take)
    – Primary documents related to any of the above (correspondence, charters.etc)
    – Articles from breed newsletters
    – Oral history from breeders, registrars etc.
    – Deliberations about new influences ( artificial insemination, bridging distance while maintaining standards, new areas of performance and competition)
    – Any material addressing the cultural significance and participation of the breed in Brazilian society now or in the past.

If any of you is able to contribute to this project, you can respond to this email and I will put you in touch with the Professors so you can directly send them your contribution.

I really appreciate all you can do and look forward to hearing from who is interested in contributing to this project

    Sincerely,

    Alessandra Deerinck

  • Marchador Journal Spring Edition

Enjoy your Spring edition of the USMMA Journal.  We hope to publish quarterly, January, April, July and October.
One of the things we hope to do with this publication is to feature the diversification of how the Marchador is used with real life examples.  This Spring we are featuring Endurance Riding.  Because of that focus,  we also included an article by Dr. Deb Bennet on the Skeletal Maturation of Horses.

Five years  ago  in the  USMMA Spring Journal, we featured an article on Brazilian champion endurance rider Pedro Werneck .  He  has been an endurance competitor for 25 years ,  is a member of the Brazilian PAN American team and  races in Brazil and internationally.  Wherever he competes the horse of this choice is the Mangalarga Marchador.  This Spring,  I thought it interesting  to report closer to home and  feature two U.S.M.M. A. endurance riders, Aline Oliveira Greene  and Alessandra Deernick.  Hope you enjoy hearing from them.

Please feel free to share with us stories of how you use your Marchadors by emailing me at:

    SubmissionDeadlines:
SUMMER-June 30:       Focus on Breeding and Stallions
FALL: September 30:    Focus on Children and Jumping
    and WINTER: December 31.

As we are just starting to roll out the USMMA Journal  as a quarterly publication, we are seeking input as to what are readers want.  Towards this end, we are asking the question:

DO YOU WANT TO HAVE  PAID ADVERTISING IN THE JOURNALS.?

Please share your thoughts on this by  emailing me. montanamarchador@gmail.com

    Happy Trails,

  • USMMA Registry Survey Project – 2016

Look up your horse (on a laptop or desktop computer!  http://t3k.315.mywebsitetransfer.com/registry/view-pedigree/
Goal: To correct and update the USMMA Horse Registration Database in 2016, including new photos. To encourage people not registering their Marchadors to join the USMMA and registry. If successful, to recommend that this project be repeated every 5 years. As a side benefit, people will also be asked to rejoin the USMMA as part of the survey process if they are not current members.

Project Volunteers: Tresa Smith, Lynn Kelley, Megan Fallwell Thanks to them for their help and support.

    Budget: $0

    What we did:
Emailed all members asking for updates on their horses.
Followed up with phone calls if no response.
    Input new information into Wikihorse.

    Results of the project:
New on-line form created for submitting registration information on a new foal. On the USMMA website. Completed form and photos emails directly to Registrar.
Corrected EVERY MM record for horses in the US and Canada.
    Added country of birth.
    Standardized the registration numbers.
Added the ABCCMM registration number and, if appropriate, the M Brand under markings.
Changed many horse colors to grey.
Changed some horses from stallions to geldings.
Updated owner information and began transfer process for over 10 horses.
    Updated death records.
Added 23 new foals born in 2015 and 2016 to the database. Will be registered as DNA is received.

Not under the scope of the project and new questions raised: Perhaps future projects
Did not update photos unless people submitted them. Many horses now adults still show foal photo.
Did not contact non-USMMA members. Should be done this year or as part of the USMMA membership drive.
Did not update transfer process – and it is clear that people do not understand it.

    Some Numbers and Information:

    • 293 Marchadors in the USMMA database today.
    • 265 Marchadors still alive in the USMMA database today.
    • Added 23 new MM foals born in 2015 and 2016 (not yet fully registered)
    • 37 Marchador owner transfers identified. In the process of collecting $$ if they want the registration. Some are non-members.
    • 63 Marchadors were born in Brazil.
    • 6 Marchadors born in Canada. 24 Marchador horses there in 3 provinces.

Breakdown of horses is below. 4 US states – AZ, CA,  MT  comprise more than 40% of the MMs in North America.  Canada breakdown is BC – 5% , AB, – 3%   SK – 1%.

  • Regional Event December 10

Thank you to Silver Stables, Phoenix, AZ for hosting the first USMMA regional event!   More of these are planned around the country in 2017.

USMMA President Jeff Bosley welcomed the members and Silver Stables students.   Members came from AB, AZ, NM and TX to attend a Ned Leigh Symposium “The Discovery Channel to Your Horse”.   Key things to remember:

    1. Find-feel response
    2. Muscle movement demonstrates intent
    3. Pressure causes resistance
    4. Contact causes awareness
    5. A goal should never come before the process to achieve the goal
    6. Worry about doing the wrong thing IS the wrong thing.
    7. The slower you ask a command, the lighter the response becomes.
    8. Be interested enough to teach your horse and it will be interested enough to learn.
    9. Every command has a purpose.  Know why before asking!
    10. Leadership is the foundation of relationship.

    Photos from the day!

(p.s.  The demo mare is not a Marchador.   We had a few for Ned to use, but he wanted the “greenest” one on the ranch.  This mare had just come in for training, so he used her to show how horses would learn)

  • You can help in new gait genetics research!

    lauradvm
Laura Patterson Rosa, DVM, Brazil, is a graduate student pursuing her doctorate at UF while researching gait genetics.

The Brooks Equine Genetics Lab at the University of Florida has a new study that continues to research the genes, or combination of genes that might influence gait.   Previous studies have focused on other breeds, this study focuses on Brazilian gaited breeds, with the main focus on the Mangalarga Marchador.

Here is some background from their website:

Have you ever asked yourself why do some horses gait? Horses are, indeed, the only known species of mammals that has such a wide variation in locomotion patterns. The gait is influenced by several factors: conformation and neurobiology, and to some extent environmental factors – such as human intervention in the form of shoeing and training. Each of the physiological aspects is influenced by other numerous components. The conformation by the bone length and thickness, muscle fiber type and joint angles. Types of nerves, presence and amount of calcium and potassium transmitters and synapse receivers control the neurobiology.

Several genes affect each of these components is therefore unlikely that a single gene is responsible for gaiting, but a combination of specific genes and their alleles. And in order to discover which genes are responsible for gait in horses, we need gaited horses! The goal of this study is to identify which genes predispose horses to gait, when compared to trotting or pacing horses. Our focus is mainly on the Mangalarga Marchador, but any Brazilian gaited breed is welcome.  And we need hundreds and hundreds of horses; the more horses that participate, the more successful our study will be.

You can help by submitting information and DNA from your Marchador!

For more information on the Brazilian Breeds gaited study, please follow this link to download the gait study forms needed to submit DNA on your Mangalarga Marchador!

  • Member Update – Articles about the Marchador and more

From Alessandra Deerinck, Human to Horse, USMMA member:

Along with my warmest wishes for the Holidays, I would like to add to the list of accomplishments of the USMMA a few more instances in which I have brought the Mangalarga Marchador breed to the public’s attention  through my business, Human to Horse.

The Marchador horses I worked with, mainly from Rancho de Los Cielos, have taken part in endurance competition and will participate to dressage shows in the future. They also have been featured in articles that I wrote and had published in the US on Elite Equestrian , HorsemanNews (Dec 2014 issue)  and in Europe on Il Mio Cavallo. I have been doing this since 2012 and wanted to make the articles available to anyone that is interested. I can provide an english translation for the ones in Italian.  In 2012 one of my articles was republished in Brazil, translated in Portuguese, on the ABCCMM official magazine.

In February 2015,  I will present the Mangalarga Marchador horses that I have been training in the 2nd edition of The Day of the Horse, in Valley Center CA.

H2H is interested in working with any other breeder that would like to have their horses trained by H2H. We are located in San Marcos, California

Here are some of the articles from 2014 from Italy, where I worked MM horses. I can provide translations for any article I write in Italian.

    IMC 1:2014 Ispezione di razza

IMC 11:2013 Fieno asciutto o in brodo ridotto

I do not have the pdfs of the ones on Elite Equestrian, but you can check out the magazine online (www.eliteequestrian.us), in the past year I had one article in every issue and most of them have MM in the illustrations.
